Day before yesterday my 200tdi made a 'clunk' noise when turning corners, yesterday I turned into a car park and it went 'clunk clunk clunk' then behaved like it was in neutral. It will only go when in diff lock.
I had a crawl underneath today and couldn't see anything obvious... Any ideas what the problem may be please?

Im no expert but I have heard of this problem.As the LR has a permanent 4 wheel drive system if drive to any one wheel is lost all the power goes to that.When you engage Difflock power is sent to the front and back axels so you have drive to both the front or rear axel.Your prob could be caused by a broken half shaft or CV joint.Maybe one of the more experienced members can shed further light.
By the way dont drive it with Difflock engaged on the road or you will damage the transfer box

Thank you, had a look at the joints and they look okay to me (although i'm no expert!), would it be obvioius if the half shaft was broken? (or am I getting confused with the prop shaft here)... Could the transfer box be the problem? Also meant to say that the clunking noise was coming from the front of the car...

Just a thought-jack up each wheel in turn with the gearbox in gear.The one causing the problem will probably turn freely
 
But maybe this can help - if a tooth goes on a diff planet gear you lose drive, so replace with a second hand diff

You need to find the actual problems, no point anyone just tossing in odd suggestions as to what might have broke. So I'd start where it broke first, at the rear.

First I'd check the rear prop and UJ's. Then take the drive caps off and half shafts out .. that'll determine if it's them. If all so far has been OK then you need to check the diff .. but frankly it does sound like the diff .... So maybe worth dropping it anyway.

Then do the same for the front .. but you've got the additional problems of CV jints and swivels etc to contend with.

Get yoself 3 or 4 half shaft gaskets and a couple of diff gaskets. Drain the oil. Remove the two halfshafts. Support the nose if the diff with a jack, remove the ring of nuts except the top one, which you leave loose. Wriggle the diff nose to break the seal. Careful use of a screwdriver might be needed to break the seal. Once lose, remive the last nut and CAREFULLY lower the diff. It is very heavy if it falls off the jack. Two peeps make it easier.

Tell yer what, start with the easiest first eh... Why not take the transfer box out too just in case it might be that! :doh:

Sounds like one of you CV joints has destroyed itself...
 
As has been said before, cv joint is the most likely problem. If it is not a cv joint then half shaft or differential in that order. Rotate each front wheel and the one making grating sounds is the likely one.
 
Thanks all!!! So much advice! Having someone who knows what they're doing take a look at it in the next few days. I think I already know what the problem is, I'm guessing whatever would be the most expensive!
In the mean time I'm borrowing a jag so could be worse... just not the same as a land rover though and keep hitting my head when I get in! (and i'm only 5'2"!)
