The ideal engine to use would be the 200Tdi engine fitted to Defenders as this version has an exhaust manifold which positions the turbo high up on the engine. They are not as readily available or as cheap as the 200Tdi Disco engine though. Another option might be to buy a Disco 200Tdi engine and replace the exhaust manifold and possibly the turbo to one from a 300Tdi. I've never done that, so I'm not 100% sure it is possible but I've heard it is. If I were doing a Tdi conversion on a 109 I would put the extra effort into avoiding notching the chassis rail. It's a fundamental and highly stressed part of the chassis and notching it is surely bound to weaken it to some extent. It just seems like a bad principal to modify the design of a proven component with the result that you know it will be weaker, but think it will probably be OK. I think that with some extra effort the Disco 200Tdi engine with original exhaust manifold and turbo could be made to fit without notching the chassis: Make a 90 degree adapter to go between manifold and turbo and fit the turbo upside down with the exhaust exiting forwards.
 
To follow up on the chassis notch issue; I found a picture that I took of the 'scoop'. Provided for information only, make your own decision whether you want to do it this way or not when fitting to a Discovery 200Tdi to a LWB Series.

LOL, thats what I have (well ser3 box and overdrive)

I was just looking for more speed for over taking and less RPM as it always feels like im pushing the engine at 55mph

whats yours 88 or 109??
 
dont supose you have a rev counter on that prima and can tell me what RPM your getting around 55mph ???
 
no not at the mow shes havin a body job and overhaul 4 mot got evo intercooler on it sits at 80 mph allday on mway
 
dont know mate done this con 4 rangy when it fell 2 bits stuffed into 88 works well got a200 tdi sittin round ready 4 next 1
 
I'm going to get off my lazy arse and crack on with my 200tdi swap, I started it in February! :eek:

I've got a disco 200tdi in the Series and the turbo doesnt hit the chassis :confused:

For the exhaust I'm going to cut the original disco down pipe and reweld it at a slightly different angle and take it through the wheel arch/wing then under the chassis all the way to the back with flexi tubing :p Or... shall I just send it upwards Lorry stylee LOL
