Hello everyone, I have often wondered why the 300 Tdi engine is described as "more refined" and "quieter" than the 200 when they are also described as "basically the same engine"-What exactly are the differences that cause this added quietness and refinement?

200tdi was a gap filler while they developed the 300tdi to meet euro regs that 2.5td wouldnt meet,

as you have said they are practically the same engine,

200 defender and disco are different, both timing cases and turbos, maybe more aswell,

300 tdi are all the same I think unless its a edc,

200 has lt77 gearbox 300 has r380

Second thoughts,

Water pump is diffrent between 200 and 300 and thermostat housing

And the aux belt set up is different

Yep 300 water pump is mounted way too high so it don't take much coolant loss for it to stop circulating.

200TDI uses V belts
300TDI uses serpentine belt.
