hi

wished to share as I've taken off the inlet manifold, does look very clean but going to soak it overnight and put a steamer through it , removed pcv , bmw type , air filter , to see what the condition is

done a egr bypass and oily in the 90 degree hose

need to replace the egr hose and the left hand one, very soft , also the air inlet hose is very fraid

will put some more pics up as I go along

wondered if I out a steamer into the engines inlet if it would do any harm,then scrap round as far as I can then put a thin nozzle from the Hoover in there

but concerned in case as the inlet valves move and I've dislodged some crap if it will sit under the inlet valve , might leave it , just in case

new varta battery 110 in place ,

also got a breather extension kit to fit

will do the automatic gearbox and tie it in with the ird , near the brake master cylinder , then will get someone to do the rear axle for me as I can't get underneath

to be cotd

removed my synergy box to send back for updating so it can be altered without having to turn the engine off via an oem latching dashboard switch ,

the vaccum pipe that goes from the reservoir , to the turbo down the left hand side of the engine has holes in it

the vaccum reservoir , if that's what u call it, as I pulled off the vacuum pipe the end snapped, so will have to buy a new one

new air pipe required as its all fraid

pcv is oily and just needs a wipe out along with the place it sits in the engine needs a wipe out from the oil

will order some new inlet red rings

put multimeter on glow plugs , set it to ohms and all ok

got to remove the map sensor for cleaning

that's it so far but just wished to share and will post more as I progress

Good stuff, got a box of tricks to do a similar "top end refresh" on mine. Just need a few hours without threat of rain.

What's the breather kit? Is it a set of parts or something you've pieced together? Be interested to see pics of where it all goes.

hi mate

I bought the kit complete already made up

it's to extend the rear diff, ird and automatic gearbox breather pipes up to the brake master reservoir to prevent any water ingress

the ird is all ready high but it all terminates by the brake reservoir

order a new turbo , vaccuum reservoir tank , stc4543 cost £30

new vaccum silicone pipe , 4 mm x 3 metres , need a min of 1.3 m as the old one had holes , as it went from the vacuum reservoir down to the side of the turbo

will get a new air filter but wished to get the above bits done first

the map sensor is nice and clear along with the pcv , bmw type and also the egr

also got to buy new air and intercooler hoses as there very soft

hope it may help someone along the way

we are always getting asked questions and thought it's always nice to show works that being done and share with others

anything u wish to know feel free to ask

will clean the others up with some wd40 or some wasking up liquid

when I put the maf, map , inlet o rings and camshaft sensors back in will put some silocone based grease designed for o rings that i useto use on boilers ,so the seals are properly treated and will go back in nice and easy ,

will come out very easy as its a grease not a sealent ,

What started for me as a quick filter change has resulted in a box full of air filter, BMW crankcase breather, vent filter, egr bypass, silicone hoses and the leak off pipe upgrade that Arctic2 demo'd.

Every time I thimk I'm ready to do it all in one hit another little idea pops up (I really should clean the inlet manifold too, or get a clean one ready to swap) and I find I need a bigger box... Think I might just have to do what I have and go back for the rest.

that's the trouble i can't remember where I got the kit , wonder if I bought it off here threw a member , will see if the brain works again and will certainally let u know

bought the set well over a year ago and just hadn't got round to it

ordered the new vacuum bits and should be here sun or mon

tommorow going to steam all the inlet manifold out and the engine to get rid of all the junk off it

did see the cylinder head rocker cover gasket has been leaking but looks as though all the injectors have to come out

just don't wish to get into that at the moment just in case i break one , lol

would just be my luck

been looking at the silicone hoses and can I remember what there called , can i hell , tried to look on LR cat which gives the part number but not the full description

also need to measure up the size of the air inlet hose, as plenty of people sell thm

I think it's around 80 mm ??

sad I know but very enjoyable getting all these things done and will be good when I can get my updated synergy back

If you want to change the inlet O-rings buy from here I have bought several sets and all are good ;)

I would also change the air filter if not at least wash and dry the cover.

You could also change the injector leak off T joints from plastic to brass if you wished as I do/did

funny enough the seals look really good, started steaming the inlet manifold tonight and surprising how much is coming out, put some vinegar in the steamer and it's just dropping off

yep going to wash the air filter cover as the filter looks brand new, i side looks really clean as well

I did all the service a little while ago, engine oil, filter, autobox, ird , diff etc so that's all done

will stick the steamer over the engine tommorow so I've got a nice clean start , can see then if there's any weeps or leaks anywhere , will just cover the ecu and fuse box ,


will then have to wait for the new vacuum reservour and vacuum pipes to turn up , it can get everything all cleaned up ready to go

thks also about the return t fittings,

they also look ok

having to budget a little bit as im buying a new stainless steel silencer as it needs replacing

will keep the links and thks again

Bought the wrong silicone hose kit, I should have got the one without sensor. Oh well, may just get an ally link to make ends meet. Also fitted a new turbo vent filter, but took a while to find the right pipe as the filter had vanished somewhere?

Might be psychological but it feels a bit more willing. Pulls like a train above 2000rpm. Definitely worth doing for peace of mind alone.

want to get out a steam clean the engine but don't want to in the rain

washed the out sleeve of my air filter and got it on the rad to dry

will put some pics up as I go along
 
hi what did you use to clean the air filter sleeve

I put it in a bowl of hot water and used washing up liquid

rinsed it out ensuring all the suds were out then put it onto the rad to dry

will use a Hoover on the air filter itself and also on the sleeve once it's all nice and dry again

expect i will get shot for using washing up liquid but has cleaned it up nicely , lol

I didn't check the vacuum hoses, I only had a couple hours and wanted to make sure I got the job in hand done before I get distracted. I'll probably have a recce in the week. Actually the turbo vent pipe was waisted in a few places, as you say probably worth renewing the lot.

One vacuum hose that did annoy me - I took the end off the egr and let it hang while I swapped it over. When I grabbed it to fit to the bypass it popped off the engine and had to get the inspection camera to find where it should live. Hardly any resistance getting it back on so I think I may need to replace that one anyway.

Amazon deliver on a Sunday? That could prove costly for me...

the delivery was a fiver , plus the vacuum pipe had to be a min of 1.5 m long

ref the vacuum hoses they also went where ur talking about and a nightmare to see with the inlet manifold in the way

Nice one, that came up alright.


not bad for abit of washing up liquid etc

expect the cleaners u can buy are a silly price and for what I needed it for just thought I would try it

am rather pleased with that , lol

still got to wait also for my vaccum reservoir seeing i broke the bloody end off when trying to disconnect the old split one

typical , knew it was going too well , hope it doesn't rain tommorow

wonder if it will make any difference after its all put back together
