hi guys,

Is it possible to get a 2 seat defender and take the cubby box out and put the small 3rd seat in with the belts and everything...and have it fitted by a ncap rated mechanic so the insurance is legit with 3 up front?

Should be no problem at all, considering they were originally designed for 3 up front, and I don't think they've changed much!

I suppose actually fitting a seat is the easy part.
the difficulty may be in getting insurance cover afterwards. On a traditional 2 seat defender, how many seats are on the V5 tax book? If there is 3 this is an easy fix.
For instance my transporter kombi has got 6 seats on the V5 even though it rolled off the factory with 3 seats in the back and 2 captain seats up front.
Does anyone know whats on there v5 with a typical van style defender with 2 seats up front?

I suspect your 2 seater were originally a three seater, and someone has added the cubby. The middle seat is a bit over familiar IMO.

Yes it would be for 3 adults, but its really for me and my 2 boys (6 and 8 years old). 3 adults would be a bit of a squeeze ha

There should be a seat belt anchor hole if you dig round, this should tell you all you need to know.

I actually don't have defender at the minute. I am looking for one preferably with 3seats. What i noticed is there is far more selection with of 90's with 2 seats than 3 seats up front. So i am wondering can i buy a 2 seater with 3 seats on the V5, and do the wee conversion with no hassle.
the actually work i'd say is the easy bit. Satisfying the insurance co would be hard as a lot of them will not recognise a retrofitted seat, unless the v5 allows for it. Does your landy have 2 seats upon front? if so what does the V5 say?

My Defender is a CSW, so many seats, however, I have retro fitted a cubby and funnily enough I had the same concern. My v5 says 5 seats, figure that?

If its a deal clincher you could fit the extra seat and belt and have it IVA tested. Not a hard job for them as they would just check seat fixing and seatbelt installation with correct spreader plates etc.
