There seems to be a lot of, "this is a bad idea" on this topic, and I'm just wondering why big winch manufacturers like Warn for example, would offer winch trays, or demountable winches in the first place if they are not going to work?

Contact someone like Dixon fabrications. They might be able to do something on one of their std bumpers.

Cheers
I contacted Dixon, and Ian got back to me super fast. He has done this for customers in the past, but warned that it is for sure not as reliable or as strong as a winch fixed on a winch bumper. Which makes logical sense to me.

I like the idea of not having the winch on the vehicle for everyday driving and mounting it on the front for a day in the lanes with the option to move the winch to the back if you need to . I saw a Warn winch with tray on eBay a couple of weeks ago and was half way tempted.
