that rear hoop can be bought from LR for about £2k lol

or you can buy the rear crossmember from paddocks for £40 lol (thats the only bit that rots)

bloody ain't..they rot on the top,the bit that holds the upper seal and around it..ask how i know..

there are a few differences..rear wings are different, front wings, door skins, inner panels.windows, etc...minor differences, later can be used with no issues other than some anorak somewhere going "errr that is not correct"

lol , mine has the odd hole but compared to my rear crossmember which looks like swiss cheese its mint lol

easier to mig up the top than swap the hoop i reckon!

The rear hoops are all the same, 4 or 2 door. The hoop on my '77 2 door is from ar '85 4 door. The rear corners (that hold the lights) ar all interchangeable also.

Changing the rear hoop is a piece of ****, once you have removed the bumper, top and bottom tailgates, upper and lower corner panels and lifted the roof!:D:D

No, the metal shell that surrounds the tailgate from the doors back, the rear part of the body.

Apparently it is a separate part and several 72 cars have had 80s rear shells fitted in replacement.

Usually with the 5 door shell.. and chassis, and enegine, and gearbox and interior, and axles.. I report every one of these I see to the DVLA

good man, it annoys me when I am bothering to restor a genuine 72 2 door that people just swap the vin tag and thats there whole restoration!

That's the problem for me, it almost always means the end of a genuine '72 or earlier car. And quiet possibly a restorable one but they are just too lazy to do it

the mans asking about differences in early and later 2 doors..the rear hoops are different on early (suffix a,maybe b) as indeed are most things..they (later and some 4 door bits) will fit,but are different in sutle ways..ie rear hoop rear wash/wiper holes..etc..small i agree, but if doing a "proper "resto important.

I sit corrected!

However, if you read some of the OP's other posts, I don't think subtle differences like washer jet holes will feature high on his agenda:D

;)

I will need a vehicle that is as robust as possible and if the only exterior difference is a rear wiper (which I guess could be removed and covered up?) and different tail lights (which could be sourced over time and replaced) then a 72 with younger rear panel parts isn't theend of the world.

As long as you're not 'restoring' a '72 with a CSK thats fine. As it could be seen as trying to find out how to prevent somone spotting a 2 door rung as a pre '72 in order to escape road tax

That makes sense.

One I have my eye on has used a 1980 donor for some replacement panels about 10 years ago.

I have also thought about buying a CSK and gutting it but to be honest most of them are just too rotten and for the hassle it makes more sence to get a pre 72 in reasonable shape and add the little things that I want.

the body is worth 1 (maybe none?)dvla points..so you can change the whole thing and keep its reg..even put on a body off a mini and still fine..

1972 is a completely spurious date in Range Rover terms.

They weren't built better before this date, its all about the free tax. OK its great when the free disc arrives but it represents a saving of £4 a week .

Forget about the tax and concentrate on getting the soundest car for the money. '73 onwards will be cheaper and nobody gives a toss what you do to it:D

good job after seeing yours chris :p just kiddin mate, its a very nice bobtail :)

I think my 72 was better rustwise than my 1990 lol, mind you it was twice the price.

Free tax is always nice, its the principle, stickin it to the man :D
