Hi, Has anyone fitted the Daihatsu 2.8td engine into a 90/110 Defender. My 19j 2.5 TD is slowly giving up the ghost, ave considered 200 and 300 tdi but have decided not to go that way due to knowing people who have trouble with those engine`s, i, have even considered putting V8 in. If anyone has done the Diahatsu conversion and has info on how to and what`s needed, can it fit onto Lt77 gearbox etc etc. Thanks

ive been watching one on ebay with this lump in it shame it was so far from me or i would of bid on it and swaped it for a 200 tdi then sold it for a massive mark up :D:D:D:D:D

The tdi engines are about as reliable an engine as you can get especially when you consider they're all as old as the hills now.

please dont put that thing in a land rover .ive had 200 tdi defenders 300tdi defenders and td5 discos all were very good . but go with the 300 tdi there the most user freindly and reliable

hello:)
will a 200tdi fit in a series 2?is it hard?would i need anything extra?
please help,im about to buy a dihatsu engine for 500 and a conversion plate as my whole engine is kapoooot

ok:),its more like this then.i know nothing about cars.i have a landrover series 2 and the engine does not work,i know someone wholl put an engine in for me.its the decision of which engine.i can get a dihatsu one for 500pound and then i need a conversion plate, another one that i dont know how good it is but has a conversion plate already and is only 100 but then everyone says the 200tdi is the best but is harder to fit.if i were someone in the know which one would i go for?or is there another way of doing it so i can just have a tax exempt diesel landrover to go about 50 in?i dont know.do you know?

Watch this Space!!

Here comes a 110 powered by a Daihatsu 2.8TD with uprated boost pressure.

Leave those 200TDIs for dust and never brake down! :p

Pictures to follow as progress is made.

You could put any engine into a Landrover so long as it will physically fit.
It all depends on how much money you have to spend, how good your engineering skills are, and how much time you have to do it. What you want to use it for should also have a bearing on which engine you select.

Jap diesels are strong and reliable and there are plenty of them kicking about. If it was me I would consider Toyota or Isuzu engines as they are pretty much bullet proof.

Landrover diesels are a bit rarer and are strong money but they normally fit with the minimum of modification. Easiest way to garantee it will fit is to replace like for like if you can get a decent one or rebuild your old engine.

As an example of what can be done have a look at this thread.

Here we are, bought a used 2.8td DL52 for £25 with a few bits missing and a conversion kit for £80

Pleased with engine so far it turns over ok, with good compression noises.
Looks clean inside rocker cover and has no oil leaks so far.

Notice the conversion thermostat housing from Milner which turns the pipe connection out to the n/s so it can link straight up with the 110 radiator

I still need a turbo oil return pipe, tee piece for the coolant pipe from the turbo, a dip stick, intercooler and pipe work and airfilter.

Got to fit another PS pump above the diesel pump rather than its standard position below it.

Rear conversion plate and daihatsu flywheel re-drilled for a series 3 pressure plate and i will use a 110 friction plate, not sure what release bearing to use yet.
Will have a mate knock me up a bronze spigot bush.

I've also got engine mountings i haven't fitted yet.
