Sorry to hear about your engine failure, was it a snapped crank? I think you can source the same engine from a jaguar, but change the sump for yours if it's ok. But I'm not sure.

Try asking about this in the range rover or maybe even the engines section, you'll get more noticed and help.

Have learnt a lot over the last 2 x years of owning mine and indeed ur spot on ref the jag engines , many buy the complete vehicle in order to hear the vehicle run and then swap everything over, indeed the D3 has the deeper sump due to it going off road
 
but if your crank has gone how do they replace that?

Indeed m If the crank has snapped engine is finished

Bet it was either a timing belt that’s let go or the oil pump cover failed

Enclosed some pics of what happens to the block when the crank goes

May i ask did it all of a sudden get worse or over time plse

What colour is the smoke , have u checked ur intercooler hoses

Is there any way u can take a quick video of the engine running , never know it might not be terminal

Have u got ur own code reader by any chance , always well worth the investment, best one is made by Gap and called an iid , alas are £400 but well worth it with these complicated vehicles
 
Hi , it started after it was significantly overfilled with oil, by about 2 litres, driven for a couple of miles, then abruptly stopped, with a big ploom of smoke out the exhaust. I left it until the following morning, drained the oil to the correct level, and the car started. I used it occasionally for a couple of months after this, but it has gradually got worse. The car now starts, but struggles to even pull away. There is s lot of light greyish smoke and it is very lumpy. The intercooler hose has been checked, and it is not losing any coolant. I am sure the valve stem seals are gone, and am just assuming maybe a piston ring too, with the added pressure of the overfill.

There are some qualified members on the D3 forum who work on these day in day out and very well respected by other members where one of them may be near u

So that can come to u and have a look and therefore save u having to use urs and prevent any further damage being done

Personally after hearing so many horror stories of so called specialist garages I wouldn’t touch them

If u post over on the D3 forum there is an extensive amount of information there, the guys here like @Nodge68 and @lynall are also extremely knowledgeable

Plenty of us here to guide and help u , other forum is free to register and also plenty there to guide u

Would just hate to see u get ripped off by some of these garages that claim there specialists

Also a great call if u can do the work urself in what @johnlad mentions ref pulling the heads to see what damage has been done

Have u done a compression test as at least then ur see if the rings have gone before pulling the heads
 
Probably worth taking the heads off to assess damage if it hasn’t suffered major mechanical trauma.

Good call, wonder if doing a compression test before hand might be a good so at can at least prove if the rings have gone

Don’t think recon heads are that expensive

Hopefully not too much damage done due to overpressurisation with excess oil fill, be good if you can save your engine.

Also wondering if the first port of call would be to get the codes read and see if there is an engine overspeed fault code logged
