Hi,

Having sold my MK1 Discovery 3.5 V8.

I am in the market for a new Landy, I have been looking to get a Freelander 2.5 V6 ES.

68k really fresh looking motor and its priced at 1550.

Any advice would be appreciated on usual things to spot/be aware of.

Make sure all 3 cambelts have been replaced.
Make sure the coolant/engine oil int mixed due to head gasket failure.
Make sure the v of the engine int got coolant in it as the thermostate housing is leaking.
Make sure the auto is smooth. Make sure you drive it from cold. Also take it on a motorway. Also switch oft when hot and restart to make sure gears are still smooth.
Make sure the transmission is working.

Contrary to what some folks say, the KV6 isn't as prone to systematic head gasket failure as the 4 cylinder K series engine.
However as with all wet liner engines, it will not tolerate air in the cooling system. This means as Hippo said, make sure the cooling system is leak free, especially the thermostat O rings and expansion tank.
The timing belts can be expensive to have done, unless you can DIY like me.
Price seems reasonable to me.

I have been hearing V6 Freelanders failing Idle pulleys and/or tensioner pulley and taking the belt with along them recently.

So far they were due to the two items not getting changed when the belts were done. I would verify that they were done in the paperwork.

Not fun, this means opening the heads and verifying and replacing bent vales. We are talking double digit hours to do this. Very expensive job since the KV6 is an interference engine.

I would also verify that the waterpump thermostat and associated pipework were changed at the timing belt interval.

Price is very good - you won't get one from a garage for that!
In fact I wish I could find one that cheap in good nick!

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I went to look at the motor last night and gave it a test drive.

From what I can tell, its a good runner. Slight problems that need to be fixed such as the passenger side window not working, need to replace the motor. x2 new front tyres too.

Ive still got to ask the seller about the belts, unfortunately, being new to the forum meant i didn't get email notifications when you guys replied.

I'm looking to buy it today, so should have some photo's by the end of the week once everything has been fixed and I'm the owner.

Cant wait to own a LR again!!

Window will likely be the cable, very common and cheap to fix using a kit off EBay.
Freelanders are very fussy about tyres if expensive transmission damage is to be avoided. All 4 tyres should be the same make, type and size. The new tyres must always go on the rear, the rear tyres must be fitted to the front. This ensures the front tyres are slightly smaller than the rear.

Yeah the garage will be replacing everything but I will be sure to query the tyre situation. Thanks for the advise!

So, a revelation to the storey.....

When test driving I had asked him what the whining was when accelerating

He has now came back and said he is not selling the motor as it needs timing belt change, which i suspected and was still willing to buy and get this changed as well as the CAM belt.

Oh well back to the drawing board....

Any leads to freelanders would be appreciated to guys. Your not getting rid of me yet im still set on LR :)

So it's going to need the belts doing then, and something in the transmission too by the sound of it. He obviously wants to sell it to some poor sole who hasn't been on here to find out what to ask about first.
If you are looking for a Freelander, there are plenty to choose from.

In fairness to the seller he has chosen to auction it rather than sell the motor on his name.

What would you say is the best auto freelander? Excuse my limited knowledge guys :)

TD4 ES Auto is the one with the best options and engine,

That said I am also looking for a 2.5 v6,
they are fairly cheep in comparison to the diesel due
to the poor Fuel Economy..

I am hoping for a 2003 ish for about 2K,
But it has to be the right one..

It depends on what you mean by "best" ?
Best spec would be an ES or HSE.
Best economy would be the TD4.
Best performance would be the V6.

You should be able to enable this in yer profile. Click on USER CP a few inches from the top of yer computer screens on the left and choose option INSTANT EMAIL NOTIFICATION in the DEFAULT THRED SUBSCRIPTION MODE bit and then SAVE the changes.
