Hello all,
I'm wanting to rebuild an engine for my 1984 90. I've got a cheap offer of a 2.5td which obviously isn't too different to my 2.5 that i have now. I'd be looking to strip it all down and fully rebuild but having researched on the tinterweb i'm worried that I may be just rebuilding an engine that will still fail on me. Should I just ditch this idea and save my money for a TDI? Or does anyone actually think this 2.5td project is a good idea? Any advice would begreatly appreciated.

Cheers.

well my td has done 130k and survived as am sure yours has however your giving up a canny few bhp if you keep it as is!

compression testing mine soon as I rekon the rings am gone. gonna save up for a bashed up tdi disco in the summer and have the engine gbox and tbox away

My local landy garage has just had a 2.5TD thats done over 190,000 miles (no joke) without ever having a rebuild!!!

If you've got a 19J that's working fine keep it but I wouldn't bother spending significant money on one. Get a tdi.

my td had 159,000 on the clock when the cambelt went,so it got repaired then it just went back after a couple of weeks, ive now got a 200 tdi and wish i had done it sooner and not kept throwing money at the td.my advice 200tdi all the way..
