Hi all just a bit of advice please. Which oil would be the best oil for a 2.5TD 1995 with 245000ml on the clock, mineral, semi synthetic, or fully synthetic.
cheers in advance

ps only done 1500ml since putting original engine back in due to replacement engine eating itself.

Fully synthetic 5W40 or 10W40 according to the book. I prefer 5W40.

Expensive can be better, regular changes along with oil filter is most important.
Mine took a few changes to get it decent with cheap(er) oil, worth putting more expensive one in when it’s up to scratch and be in there while maybe

Do you visit Alaska with it often? :D:D
5W40 covers the widest temperature range of the specified oils, it has been down to -17C here, lower with wind chill. At the other extreme it was close to 42C this year. 5W40 makes cranking in extreme cold a tad easier.

Good point, I do think with the extra mileage on mine at 210,000 I like to stay with the 10w40. I did used to use the 5w40 in my old omega 2.0i as it made a massive difference to it in many aspects but it had far less mileage. :D

That's a bit higher mileage than the 167K on my project car which also runs on 5W40:D

If it’s old engine bit thicker would be good, if your in warm climate also. Over 30c here this year and although no problems I think thicker oil would have helped in the warmer weeks, but no point for few weeks of the year that it mostly spent being stripped.

One thing I’ve only now noticed - heat wave has popped the black vents in my dash, don’t think they’ll ever sit right again :(

40W is not thick?

did pop a rad hose soon after and she don’t like heat, no problems in cold.
Luckily since getting it to manage in a heatwave, now it’s cooled off it runs fine. Still got to do tank pump

Cheers all 10w40 it is. Going £16/5l oil cheap and cheerful and change it again in another 1000ml. Couple of them then put the Castrol in.

9 1/2 litres to change. Get two and you’ll have little bit if you need top up in future. Remember to fill the oil cartridge when you do the filter, better than leaving it dry

My local motor factors sells 40 litres 10W40 semi for £38 Change every 4 months ,not bad value and its a decent oil, well my Rangie likes it, but then I only do 5 to 6000 a year
