Hi, I have a constant problem with the oil filter seals leaking on my 2.5DT. I have changed the filter and fitted the new seal and tightened the plastic cover but the oil always eventually starts to leak out. If I tighten the plastic cap too much the oil seal gets displaced and oil leaks out. If I hand tighten only the cap starts to slacken itself and oil leaks out again. It seems to me that the oil seals that come with the new filters aren't thick enough for the job. The wife isn't too happy about the patches of oil appearing on the driveway, any suggestions please.

Hi basher79, the filters I have used are the usual ones from motor trade shops and britpart but the O ring seals don't seem thick enough and if they are slightly overtightened they squeeze out of shape and oil leaks out.

As above smear engine oil on ring to stop it pinching .are you sure its from the cap and not oil cooler o rings or filter housing to block .also don't forget there are two types early metal type and later plastic types the filters are not the same for both one is shorter so if you Put the longer one in the shorter one cap won't screw down properly.

Yes, I always smear some oil onto the seal before fitting, I think the problem is in the design of the seal itself, a slightly thicker and flat seal would be better and not distort so easily. I might try a land rover filter kit, well sod the expense it is a P38 after all what is money for!

Hi Defender300tdi, I always smear engine oil on the seal first and it's definitely coming out from the seal area. I've checked using a mirror when the engine is running, I'll try a land rover filter kit as basher79 has suggested.

If a Land Rover filter gives the same problem then you might want to try replacing the housing.
Those of us who drive diesel Rangies know that they are so reliable that they are very rarely scrapped but you might find a Beemer that you could nick one from.

Good idea Cossie David, I did try some ptf plumbers tape round the threads at the top of the casing but oil eventually leaked past it but strong thread looks like a good solution.

Hi Grrrrrr, yes It's a 2000 model with a plastic cap and I've checked it carefully for cracks and there aint any. I think its the rubbish O rings that dont make a good seal. Thanks.

Dont know how correct this is but my mate works in a 4x4 workshop and has for many years and he says the plastic top goes out of shape and leaks, he said throw the old one away and use a new on and it will stop leaking.

Being a Land Rover it will only start leaking from somewhere else.

You can get em about £35 plus vat :) I'd go for the plummers tape first tho nothing to lose if your really good you can bulk the oring out where it sits in its its Recess

Thanks fellas, I hadn't thought about the plastic caps going out of shape, though I'll try a bit more plumbers tape round the threads in the meantime and if oil still keeps leaking out, I'll probably go and part with more cash and get a new one ££££. Once again thanks for the info.

Try sourcing a fatter "O" ring:)

Not sure Keith but think the later filter kit comes with two large O rings one for use with the metal case and one for use with the plastic one. Wrong O ring fitted may leak.

What kit wammers? I've the plastic type mine ever only comes with three o rings two for the spike and a large one for cap ?? What's the differance between the metal type and plastic I've always thought the differance is in length they have differant part numbers I seen a diagram somewhere showing one to be longer ??
