Hi everyone,
this is my first thread and its made with 'head in hands!!!.
i've had my freelander for just 2 weeks and a landy mechanic says a new auto box is required...its an X reg.at just 50800 miles on the clock... just as well its covered by warranty.
the symptoms are most prominent when 'the box' is cold!...but as soon as it
warms up, everything seems ok.the engine will reach 3000 revs before changing up from the lowest gear...and then every change is like a kick from a donkey!!! the same as taking your foot straight off the clutch on a manual box...but again as soon as the temperature rises, everything works fine..has anyone ever had this problem?...a new box is £800 plus labour!!!!!!!!!!!!!

£800 plus labour sounds good to me. How much would labour cost?
Read the small print of the warranty though. I needed to get my head gaskets changed on the V6 Hippo a while back and the warranty company paid under half of the total cost. Only needed ONE gasket you see. The fact LR say they are to be changed in pairs doesn't matter. Warrantys are worth $#!+ when it comes to claiming. I'll never get a warranty again. Instead put the money in a savings account and use it when it needed.
Sorry to hear about the gearbox mate. That's LR build quality for you :(

thanks for your comments Marksurry.
i've been in touch with the warranty co; and they say £1000 limit on each
claim...we'll see!!
labour charges are good at £28/hour...the warranty co; will pay up to £34 to £44 out side the Big City and won't even consider 'main dealer' charges which as you know are astronomical:eek:
another problem is that with investigating the fault and then the remedy the final charge will be over the £1000.
i have 'phoned the place where i bought the car and they seem sympathic,
saying that as i've only had the car 2 weeks they'll go half of the charge outside the warranty figure...again we'll see
good idea of yours to save for future problems rather than spend on them...i might take that up....episode 3 tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmmm

well if ya can get a box for that price i would not grumble, jatco autobox retail at approx £3000 through a main dealer,

i would not even attempt that for £28 an hour it taakes about 6 hours and the jobs worth way more than £168.

but yes harsh gearchanges are normally a box fault.

I took out a maintenance package on my last motor and, after doing the sums, I realised that virtually all the work that I had done on the car was covered by the warranty anyways - I have decided to put £100 a month into a separate account this time around and see how i go with that - time will tell I guess

LR Guy, what would you charge to change a gearbox?
I'm not sure if I would be glad to get a cheap quote or worried that it may not get done right. Tough call. Lets face it, you use the gearbox on every journey and it needs to work well.

Dind't you do the oil thing Ming? I did, made a big diference :D
Well yes i did Mark, but did not have any g/box problems it twas just over due on mileage, but have heard that if the jatco box go's low can cause problems with gear change,so for the cost that would be worth a look. . .:)

I see, thanks for clearing that up Ming.
Weren't you thinking of buying a V6 Freelander? I know some one that's selling one for £5500 ;)

i think the v6 is the best motor all round , but the mpg lets it down, but there must be someone who's object is pure power who would want it. . .:)

Hi Guys,
More news on my defective V6 G. Box!:)
My landy mechanic would be fitting a recon; g.box which on average costs £800 plus labour (and yes a new one is £2900 + v.a.t)
However, when I had the car back last weekend (it would still run ok when warmed up) just to use until he worked out a final charge for the job...
3 lights came on...TC..ABS and HDC...I stopped immediately..waited 5 minutes
and when I started again...no lights came on and since then the g.box has not been 'playing up!! so much.
I always assumed that the problem was electronic not mechanical..otherwise it might not operate at all.
I found an 'autobox specialist' in Bristol via yellow pages and they confirmed what my mechanic had already diagnosed...a defective 'speed sensor' inside the box... theres no need to replace the g.box just the 'speed sensor' and it would cost no more than £600 in total...and in some cases no need to remove the box to carry out the repair!!

I heard faulty speed sensors could cause these problems too. Lets hope that it was an electrical fault like you say and all is ok now.
Keep us informed of the problem ;)

Just remember that there is an Auto Speed Sensor recall (D125 in oz). Go to LR dealer and ask for it. Good luck !!

only applicable to certain chassis range just phone up dealer and ask if there are any outstanding recalls to your vehicle.

Hi guys,
Since my last posting on this subject...I 'phoned the previous owner...who
told me that they had gearbox problems some 2 years ago on this car, but as it 'righted' itself they never took it in for repair...and I must say that so far this seems to be the same on this occasion!!...no problems for a few days, but who knows?!!! electronoics be strange with a 'mind of its own!!'
Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
