Hi,
I'm picking up my "new" land rover 90 2.5 TD tomorrow. I was so excited until I read that the 2.5TD is a load of @*$p!!
Have I made a mistake? It was built in 1990 but does still have 2.5TD on the back so I assume was not the newer "better" 200TDI
What should I do, apart from cry and not tell the wife I messed up?

Any help, or reassurance would be gratefully received.

Jon

If it is a 1990 model, then I think I am right in saying that they had stronger blocks etc in these more recent ones? Probably will be fine. How many miles it done?

It is not completly ****, it depends really what care has been taken by the prevous owner.

Get it, change the oil take care of it, don't thrash it and you could get many many happy miles out of it.

The engine is actually a good unit, its when LR put a turbo onto it they caused the problems.

serviced regularly and not driven like a lunatic, a 2.5TD is great.

I'm doing a full vehicle rebuild and have chosen to keep the 2.5TD as it can be worked on with a twig, some chewing gum and dark words.

if it was going to blow up it would've by now

That depends on what state the engine is in and how much you paid. Certainly the 200TDI is better and much more reliable. If your TD has been properly rebuilt and had regular oil changes and injector/pump servicing then it could be fine. They 'breath' very heavily if poorly. There is loads on Google about Landy 2.5TD engines. I'm after a cheap 90 if you decide to sell it. :(
Good Luck :)

I thought exactly the same when i got mine and now love it - always have me eye on making the change to the 200 which is without doubt a better engine but the td is perfectly OK, especially that late (they strengthened them a bit towards the end). Mileage don't matter too much coz they are apparently easy to overhaul and need doing (if well maintained and nothing major fails) at about every 100k. So long as you don't need to be anywhere quick, they're fine - loads of torque - don't worry about the engine, it's the rest! What's the chassis like?

I've had mine for a year and done about 10000 trouble free miles, 140k now. If it's been serviced and at that mileage it should be a good un. Like any other engine if it's been abused it could be crap. There's a lot of crap talked about the 19j engine there's nowt wrong with it if it's looked after.

Land Rover introduced a new cylinder block for the 2.5 Turbodiesel (part no. ERR479) from engine number 19J27515C.

if that helps any

So if it has the later engine block everything should be fine? right? as long as its been serviced regularly, which it has.
Thanks everyone, I think I can sleep again tonight.

The engine is the least of your worries, what's the rest of the car like?

The rest appeared when I did the initial inspection to be very clean and solid, no rust. It was owned by a doctor who liked to think he was a country gentleman and treated it like a car. However, tomorrow when I pick it up and bring it home I'll probably be on the forum talking about the terrible things I've found!
