Hi

I have an ex military defender and have been looking in to the oils used in it.
Found the military service schedule online and it states OMD80(10W/30 multigrade) for both the engine and the gearbox.
However land rover workshop manual sates 15W/40 for the engine and automatic transmission fluid for the gearbox.
Which would be the best way to go with this??
If the military schedule is correct it has spent 20 years with the 10W/30 oil so this shouldn't be a proble should it??
Gearbox is LT77 5 speed.

gear box does want atf dexron 2 or 3 because baulk rings were designed for that oil,10w 40 or 30 is ok for engine as would be 15w30 or 40

I have been using 10/40 in my ex military Defender which has now done 165 thousand miles of hard work and is running very sweet. Doesn't require any oil between servicing.

I found that my NA was happiest with mineral 20/50, available from Halfords. If you have any small leaks the heavier oil may reduce them - it did for me.

Thanks!

Would thee use of the 10/30 oil in the gearbox have caused any damage?
Mike/zeaphod what are you running in the gearboxes?

Not sure what is in mine at the moment still got to drain it.

it would only hurt the baulk rings ,the bearings and gears etc will run on any oil , you may well be lucky but run box on atf in the future

just found another post that recommends MT75D gear oil for the LT77. Any ideas if this is any good??

lt77 was designed using atf ,it has 2 types of baulk ring coated and grooved both use atf ,its possible another oil could mitigate worn rings in some circumstances but at the same time would shorten their life as a rule

EP 90 in the transfer box with a tin of Molyslip gearbox oil. I have no idea what's in the gearbox as I have never touch it. Looks like you've ruined my weekend, I will have to check it out.

Cheers Mike
Sorry to ruin the weekend!
I have a digital copy of the wsm that has those tables I just wanted to check it up against what the military service schedule said. It definitely says OMD 80 for the LT77 box. Going to do all of the fluids and a good service on my landy when I get home. Only just got it so need to get it to a good starting point!

yippee I got this right even my local spare parts store questioned the use of ATF but I told em check out landy zone

My 1986 110 came direct from the military, I don't know what exactly is in the gearbox (LT77) but it is definitely red and looks like ATF.
