no AFAIK as I know gears 1 and 2 are slightly lower but the rest and the T box are the same.

I am prepared to be corrected though as I cant quite remember!

Don't MoD 2.5's use the 1.6 transfer box instead of the 1.4 as found in most other 90/110's?

yep. Thats what I know aswell.

On a side note, cambelt changed on my 2.5 today and engine re-timed. Immediately noticed a difference, started and idled much nicer and seemed smoother in the pickup when accelerating (not that it is smooth or accelerates lol)

so if you have one of these, check your timing. I suspect mine was slightly retarded
 
I have ex mil 2.5 n/a and in a month or so I am gonna replace the Cambelt but howdy u re time it ? If I may ask ?

Dash etc do you think it has the right engine mounts ?? I know they rattle anyway but

Most late '80s vehicles will have had the 2.5td (19J). I have this in my 90 and I like it. It gets a lot of bad press which is not entirely deserved. Mine will cruise happily at 60 on the motorway (and will do a noisy 70) and will tow without any trouble at all. Pre-1986 they would have been fitted with the non-turbo engine, which has less power but will still plod along well. You may struggle on hills when laden though. AFAIK the petrol engines give good performance but are thirsty.

At one point it was cheap and simple to retrofit the 200tdi engine from a discovery or defender, so it's not uncommon to find an older vehicle with a newer engine. This would probably be the best option if the conversion's been done well, but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with one of the older engines.
 
My series easily does 70 with a 2.5 in, takes a while to get there though. Can cruise nicely at around 65 on the flat on a good day and it feels like it has more to give. (checked with a gps before anyone accuses the speedo of being dodgy :D )

Bombproof engines, just pretty slow
 
Santel try some millers injection cleaner added to your fuel tank sounds like faulty injector or head gasket.
 
Did around 1100 miles last week and on the motorways she cruised easily between 75 and 85, and on the Green Lanes she did everything that was asked of her!

Over the week she averaged 34.6 mpg.

I've just finished 700 odd miles, averaged 35mpg. In one 200 mile part of the trip, I actually managed 40mpg! That's cruising at 50/55 mostly, the roads in the West of Ireland don't support high speeds. I'd be interested to discover what RPM you're doing at 85mph, I always thought the engine sounds happy at 60. Mind you, I can hardly hear the engine over the gearbox noise at anything over 50!

FFS mine is a 1990 110 and you think that I know what revs!!

She runs quietly enough for me to listen to the new fangled wireless/CD thingy at whatever speed I am doing, without the volume turned anywhere near loud!!

BTW I don't have any soundproofing fitted either! :D

I have a 300tdi 90 with a 1.4 - 1 transfer box and 235/85 tyres and I can't do more than 70 without my ear drums bursting, flat out with fingers in the ears steering with knees I can just about get 80mph on the flat! Listening to a radio if there was one would be impossible beyond 50mph and even a conversation shouted at 70mph is tricky! Maybe I should rebuild a 2,5na and fit that.

You can't go wrong with a well-built and well-tuned 2.5 NAD!

My TDI is losing water, not into the oil (at least not producing mayonnaise) and not onto the ground, so I am semi serious about dropping a 2.5NA as it is an early 90.

I don't own a stethoscope but I am familiar with using a large screw driver placed between the block and the bone just in front of the ear to listen to what is going on inside the engine. But what is it that you are listening for, is it just a sweet spot, or is it more scientific?

The 2.5na certainly has a less harsh sound than the TDI.
