Hello,

I have searched the forum and there seems to be quite a few posts on this subject but none of them list the exact symptoms my engine has.

Upon start up it has what sounds like a very noisy tappet (like the old manually adjustable ones on old engines) this is initially quite loud and after a short time quietens down at tick over, however it reappears once the engine begins to rev up but does stop being audible at in excess of about 2750-3250 Rpm.

After approx 10 mins or so of being driven it completely disappears.

The car has 122K on the clock

Please help i know very little about more modern engines, i think the last engine i toom apart was a ford x-flow from a Mk 1 escort.

A friend of mine has said this may be caused by a weak hydraulic lifter another reckoned it was the big end, could either be correct ?

Many thanks

Micheal

have you tried the old trick of holding a long screwdriver to near where you think the noise is coming from and putting your ear on the end of the screwdriver to see if you can hear the noise any better.

Would think it is a tappet, a bigend knock would not go away as you describe. Only thing to do is either replace the tappet or strip and clean the old one. The tappets work on the principal of a outer shell with a piston in it. Engine oil is forced at pressure past a none return valve, in this case a ball bearing, this causes the piston to move in the outer shell and take up the slack. If you have even a small bit of crap on the ball seat and the engine stops with the valve that tappet works on depressed, the oil will be forced out because the ball is not seated.

i had a loud tapping sound when i first got my rr 2.5 after all the changing the oil and a good service the tapping never went away . then i thought it could be an injector so i removed the airbox and sprayed a very small amount of easy start up the intake .in short spurts and every injector made a very loud tapping sound then went away almost emediatly so i repeted this three times and each time i sprayed thay all tapped loudly but the tapping sound has compleatly gone . so i figure it must have been somthing wrong with one of the injectors so now i always put injector cleaner in every month just an idea chip

Firts thing i would do is a oil change with the best quality oil you can afford.

good idea, but firstly i would use one of those oil products that get rid of all the old burnt oil and crud that can build up over time.there is one especially made for freeing hydraulic tappets.i told BoB about this product when his tdi seat had the same problem.he used it and no more noisey tappets.it's worth a try for about 6 or 7 quid.i have used it myself on a vauxhall cav engine with the same problem and it sorted that out as well.;)

I will try some of that stuff that frees hydraulic tappets as i have a tap for a minute or so after starting, and a noise from a faulty injector used to be known as "injector knock"

spraying anything up the inlet doesnt go through the injectors so you must of been lucky, the knock you heard is diesel knock not the injectors. if it worked for you though then thats a bonus, a common problem with diesels is the steel insert around the injector coming loose and rattling. your not going to be able to see this unless you take the head off.
