Hi all i have just picked myself up a 97/98 RR 2.5 dse.
Im lost on where to look with this fault i have got. The RR runs like a watch does not smoke abit BUT is a pig to start  the impression i get is like im having run back with the diesel because it needs to be turned over for some time before it starts.
I have changed the heater plugs witch was a funny thing because the lights go out on the dash but it takes 12sec more for the plugs to get the full heat and the relay switch off is that normal
:director:CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE!!!
Thank you for any advice

Do a search of the Range Rover sub-forum for the following:

  • Air in the fuel line
  • In-tank fuel pump (fuel sender / fuel lifter)
  • Leak-off pipes (spill-off pipes)
  • Glow plugs (I assume you replaced with new plugs?)
  • Low battery
Also, the DSE is extremely unforgiving of a worn-out battery. Many regulars on the RR forum have changed theirs for a 1100AH beast from batterymegastore. I could literally hear the difference in the speed the started motor was spinning when I changed mine.

If the problem is only when hot, then this is a fairly well discussed issue on the forum. (Search for hot start issues)

Start by changing the injector leak off pipes, this made a difference to my Grandfathers P38 DSE. If you're still having problems get a non return valve for the fuel line just before the filter (think the id is 6mm) you can get these from most motor factors, and like has been said a good battery is a must to get them to start but the first two are way cheaper than a new battery.

i have a 2002 td5 disco with similar problem, realy striggles to start after being left for a few hours, ive changed glow plugs , serviced every filter , changed rear fuel pump/sender. and still no better i have run out of ideas? please help me my battery is good and glow plugs have juice going to them also.

thank you all its the same if its hot or cold thank you all for your ideas i will tick them off one by one and hopfuly one will do the job ha ha :cheer2:

The cold really takes it toll on the battery, I know mine is a bit older but I did everything new bosch plugs, new battery, stopped using bio everything. Sometimes trying to start it would drain the battery so much it had no chance of starting but with a jump (embarrassingly off a daewoo matiz that would fit in the boot) it would roar into life no problem.

So I was about to spend a small fortune on a red top battery with higher CCA which would account for the drop when the temperature drops so low during the winter then just before I bought that I thought what about a charger? So £14 later the battery is kept to the top of it's game despite the baltic conditions and the old diesel starts no problem now.

Also when it is cold you should keep the clutch (if you have one) fully depressed as well as the accelerator. Because when you miss that first opportunity to start you're just harming your chances of ever getting it started as the battery drains.

Of course it could be one of the other problems that land rovers sometimes have, I hear they sometimes go wrong?
