Hi everyone putting this thread on for a friend. His range rover has started to run sluggish. Engine runs well, Tho the viscus fan is sticky and makes hell of a noise when setting off. No clutch slip. Sounds loads of power but slow through all gears. wont pick up. Took air filter out , see if it was blocked, but no. Hope someone can shed some lite on the matter. Lets see what we can try. Cheers guys. John fha.

Pressure pipe from under manifold to MAP sensor on fuel filter. Connected? No splits and clear of obstructions. Turbo pipes delaminted internally? Intercooler partially blocked (remove and wash out) Change viscous fan. There's a bit to be going on with. Let us know how you get on.

They certainly are Keith. Also worth checking is fuse 39 fuel pump fuse. 10 amp pre 1999 20 amp there after. If that has blown pump won't work.

Is this sluggishness all the time or only when setting off from cold?

Mine has similar issue when setting off from cold and while the gearbox oil warms up. It doesn't change up and the engine revs until I get to the end of the road and then it starts behaving itself again. I guess my gearbox is a bit worn but I just live with it.

You need to change the gearbox oil and filter. If it gets parially blocked and oil won't flow through it until it warms and thins.

Did this last year as I thought it would improve the slight delay between 1st and 2nd but it didn't help, think its dirt in the govenor but not done anything about it.

Perhaps it's time to do it again.

Going to clean intercooler this weekend so will leave servicing autobox for another day.

Really?

I've been told by my old local LR garage that the P38 has a govenor in the autobox and that dirt in this can cause a delay in going up through the gears?

Will have to do some more research?

ask them again ive built quite a few and theres only a park brake in rear housing,pr38 ,disco 2 are electronicaly shifted ,rrc, disco 1 have governor
