I have just fitted a recon cylinder head onto my range rover and was wanting to set the valve/cam timing correctly. I marked the cam etc before I removed it and the new cam is back in the same place but need o check it was correct when I removed it?

Is there anything I can measure on the cam when the Locking pin is in the flywheel? to make sure it is correct without buying the locking plate from LR.

If you had flywheel locking pin in place when you took head off, engine has not been moved and cam is back in same place it won't be far off will it?
 
I agree it should not be far off but there is slight marks on the top of the pistons from the inlet valves so suspect it may not be exactly right?
 
Long story really!!

Cracked the head initially ( overheating )

Fitted recon head and engine not firing correctly on all 6 cylinders . puffing back through no5 inlet ( running with inlet manifld off) I know i should not really do that. So removed head again to check and found no5 exhuast valve was bent. Must have been damaged prior to fitting it ( recon head which was not packaged very well from supplier)
This was when I found a very slight contact on inlet valve of all cylinders. ( clean patch on top of pistons) no damage but concerning.


Valve been replaced and head fitted back on again with new gaskets and bolts again.

Just checking setiings before I fire it up.

You could download the RAVE manual FREE from LandyZone, and do the job just how the manual says.

There's even nice pics to show you.


1. Clean gear locations on camshaft and
crankshaft, fit Woodruff key to crankshaft.
2. Temporarily fit crankshaft gear and if
necessary, turn crankshaft to bring timing mark
on gear to the twelve o’clock position, remove
gear.
3. Temporarily fit camshaft gear.
4. Turn camshaft until mark on camshaft sprocket
is at the six o’clock position, remove gear
without moving camshaft.
5. Position timing gears on work surface with
timing marks aligned.
6. Fit timing chain around gears, keeping timing
marks aligned.
7. Fit gear and chain assembly.
8. Fit camshaft gear bolt, restrain camshaft gear
and tighten bolt to 50 Nm (37 lbf.ft).

You should be able to get it right without timing tool. Did you take camshaft off with head in place. If you did, you are supposed to turn engine from TDC before replacing cam, after cam is fitted wait 30 mins before turning engine back to TDC. Tappets expand this time is required for them to shrink down under pressure from camshaft so they don't strike pistons.
 
Aha ....

5. Rotate crankshaft clockwise until No.1 piston is
at top dead centre (TDC) on its compression
stroke. Insert timing pin LRT-12-108 into hole in
flywheel/drive plate.
NOTE: TDC No. 1 is indicated when
camshaft lobes of No. 1 cylinder are
positioned as shown.


6. Fit camshaft holding tool LRT-12-112.
7. Remove timing chain tensioner access plug,
remove and discard sealing washer.
8. Using tool LRT-12-115, retract timing chain
tensioner and insert tensioner pin LRT-12-114 to
retain tensioner plunger.
CAUTION: Ensure eye of tensioner pin
LRT-12-114 is vertical not horizontal.

DID YOU DO THIS BIT ?

The camshaft timing may be way off if you didn't do this when you fitted the head.

Not too sure with that bit? ??

Basically the same with the chain tension , but just marked the position on the cam when I removed it , then marked the cam in the recon head in the same bit and bolted back in.

As for leaving time between fitting cam for the tappets to settle down( I never realised this but took more than 30mins to bolt stuff back together so probably has had enough time to settle in.
 
The question boils down this - did you retract the timing chain tensioner as required?

I think it is possible that your procedure might not have resulted in the cam timing being perfect - and it must be perfect.

If I install the flywheel pin and the cam plate in the positions in the procedure then lock up the bolt, when I then turn the engine by hand on the crank sprocket the valves contact the piston tops.

I have put the engine back to my markings and it runs fine.??

Is the location hole in flexiplate/Torque convertor? if so is it possible that somebody has put the flywheel/torque convertor in the wrong position?

The location hole is NOT in the torque converter. It is in the skinny flywheel that carries the starter ring gear and the drive-flex-plate.

Did you have the timing pin in the flywheel and check that the cam was sat as shown in RAVE. BEFORE you removed the head. Was the locating pin in place with timing mark on pump drive visible in up position proving TDC firing number one when you replaced head? If not you could have it timed on any cylinder if you just followed your own markings. Did you spend your honeymoon stood up in a canoe? Why make life hard for yourself by not following the correct procedure.:eek::eek::eek:

No I did not check the timing before I removed the head. I scribed a line on the crank pulley and the cam. This should have been enough as I was not disturbing the injector pump.

As for the flexiplate. can this be put on in the wrong place?

Never change a flexi plate on these, but as there are no specific instructions in RAVE about orientation when re-fitting, would have to assume they are indexed on offset dowels and only fit in one position. Would have been easier to use lock pin from start and note location of cam then you would have known if something was not right. With lock pin in, which cylinder is firing?

Well you are supposed to turn engine clockwise until number one cam lobes are flat (both valves shut) then insert pin. If you turned engine for any reason with head off you should have turned it clockwise two complete turns until with number one piston was back at TDC timing mark on pump gear was visible looking down into casing. That is TDC number one firing.Then put pin in and set valve timing. If you had cam off head for any reason after you bolted head down. You should turn engine anticlockwise 30 degrees or so and fit camshaft with both number one lobes flat then wait for at least thirty minutes for tappets to shrink. Then turn engine clockwise and insert pin. Then set valve timing.
