Just looking again at your OP. Despite the improvements mentioned has the engine had an upgrade e.g. has the cylinder head been upgraded for unleaded fuel or are you still with the original engine? The puffy white smoke isn't good, something has happened? It's not a happy engine? If it's not leaking oil as posted it's burning it but you'd expect to see loads of blue smelly smoke? The symptoms maybe related to shagged out valves and consequent loss of power or worn pistons. Do you have mayonnaise signs in the coolant?

Thanks for the replies guys, will double check the ignition & fuel lines tonight, I did pull the air filter when i got home from 4x4 trip no2 and there was no water thankfully....

Col, what electronic ignition system do you use? is it easy to install/what kind of price range are we talking? also did that fix the issues you'd been having? (There may already be a thread on this?;))

Cheers,

The. Electronic ignition module I used was a Accuspark Stealth unit. It simply replaces the old points and condenser. I put an Accuspark coil on too the lot cost about £45. I wasn't a fan of these units until I tried it but I have no regrets, it's a case of fit and forget. It takes about 10 minutes to put it on.

Will check the coolant tomorrow, as far as i know she has all original engine/head - could well be worn valves/pistons/rings or a combination like you say. That's a good point about the blue smoke - there's not a lot of blue smoke, occasionally black, but not much blue at all:confused:o_O

Col - Thanks may grab that, looks pretty good. What are your thoughts on a system that entirely replaces the dizzy compared to just the electronic kit as found on the Accuspark website?:

Planning to do a big checkup & maintenance tomorrow, so will check back then with what I find.

Thanks guys,

I considered a complete dizzy replacement for the electronic version but I want to keep the landy as original as possible. With the points replacement module, it only takes a few minutes to revert back to points. My dizzy is in good condition anyway so it seemed a waste to replace it. If your dizzy is worn, it might be worth the change to an all electronic one.

Thanks - i think the dizzy is ok, just wondered if there were other benefits with a replacement, I think i'll just go for the points replacement.

Right guys - did a bit of playin around yesterday:

Carby - looks v clean inside
-Checked carb for air leaks - gaskets etc all look good
-Checked fuel jets - look good, a little gunk in the "slow running" one which i cleaned out.
-The main jet has what looks like a tiny brass rod in the center of it - assume this is meant to be there?
-Adjusted mixture screw in and out while running - out 1 turn from the original setting was a little better

Valves - all look good, minimal to no play

Fuel System
-Checked for fuel filter - none, need to put one in
-Cleaned out sediment bowl

(still need to check compression)

Basically - she's running fine with choke engaged (revving reasonably high for idle, also popping a bit out exhaust), and absolutely no go with choke in - dies anywhere past half choke.
I think this means its a mixture issue - so am going to try running a direct gravity line from a tank of gas into the fuel inlet on carby - see if its the pump/fuel line. Any other thoughts on how to test this?
Also pretty much no smoke.

When idling with choke engaged, and ya put the gas on, there is a bit of a stutter for half second before it starts revving up....

Hope that all helps - let me know if i missed anyfing.

Cheers guys,

Howdy guys, just tried running the fuel into a bottle, then from a pool in the bottle into the carby, no difference, still won't run without choke, also is getting plenty fuel coming in.

In the main jet, is there supposed to be a small (bronze?) needle in the middle? it kinda looked like it was supposed to be there but not sure.
Or should it be just a hole thru the middle?

thanks in advance,
S3ww

thanks guys, i pulled the carby apart again yesterday, checking everything, and was looking at what looked like a piece of brass in the main jet, and thought hmm maybe i'll pull it out and see what it is, turned out to be a bloody leaf !!!:mad::rolleyes::D

Stuck her back together and shes running like an absolute dream!!

Just need to put an inline fuel filter to stop this happening again...

Thanks for all the help, glad i finally got to the bottom of it!

Cheers guys,
S3ww
