Hi all

im new here , just getting ready to buy my first landrover at the moment. Whats the realistic performance i can expect from a 2.25 diesel with overdrive? Will it do 55 on the motorway or should i forget it completely and look to a petrol.

i think its the getting up to 55 on short slip roads that would worry me, but i only have fairly limited experience. haven't taken mine on the motorway yet.
 
Yes they are slower than the petrol. standard, you'll get 45mph comfortable/50 mph tops on the motorway, the engine revs are too high over that. But if you fit 7.5 x 16 tyres and a fairey overdrive you'll be able to do 55-60 comfortable and 60-65 tops.

I wouldn't do 65mph for long though as (1) your engine will probably blow up (2) your eardrums will be perforated and (3)You won't be able to stop when some idiot slams his anchors on in front of ya.

Both fitted with 7.50s and overdrive!
2.25 diesel rule! better than any 2.25 petrol! if your getting a petrol it may aswell b v8.

LB You must have been going down hill with a tailwind to get 70 with a 2.25 diesel , :p

If you start hanging roof racks etc onto series with 2.25 diesel then as above will be only way you will get those sort of speeds.

The power available makes them very pedestrian, and fuel economy averages about 25 they are no where as quick or efficient as a 200tdi

They will take all the revs that they are capable of without any probs as most times they dont have enough power to achieve high revs in top for any length of time , unless you are in holland.

I ran these vehicles when they were comparatively new , kitted up for overland travel lwb with o/d average thru europe 45/50 mph v slow up hills, trucks pass you , down hill the opposite :D . JMHO HTSH

ps think about 200tdi engined series, or 2.25 petrol and get a gas conversion if you need more speed:cool:

ermmm when i had my diesel 109" the 200tdi wasnt around ;)

I was not saying that series came with a 200tdi , but there are quite a few that have been converted, that he could consider for purchase as opposed to a series with a 2.25 or other engine HTSH :)

Calm down! You dont have to go on the offence!
Why bother fitting a 200tdi if a 2.25 diesel is already there!
My 2.25 did 32mpg on the london to brigton and i was doing 65 70 all the way home with my dad following in his lwb which did 28mpg!
They are a great engine!
 
My bog standard 2.25 diesel does around 35-40 nicely with no overdrive.

Max I have had is 55 downhill or on the flat but it is dam noisy. Plenty torque for my green laning needs so sticking with it. Diesel waded dam well over my mates petrol one at the weekend.

55 as standard though is do-able, could be pain for distance though. Mate drove his for 5 motorway hours on Sunday (petrol lwb) at 6mph with his overdrive and made it safely (wrists probably shot but hey ho!)

35 is typical uphill so don't worry!

I used to have a 2.5n/a.

I used to say the same thing. Untill I grew up and fitted a 200TDI!! They are the bollox!! **** loads more power 111bhp as opposed to 68bhp of the n/a (i think). Because of this extra power the engine isnt working its tits off trying to kep up with mopeds. Therefore much better MPG!

Buy yourself a rotten disco. rip the TDI out. Then pull all the good panels, seats, wheels and tyres off it and slap em on ebay. Soon you will have a 200tdi for free!! Winner!

JMHO - but if you dont like it....... fook off!
 
If I was doing an engine conversion, it would have to be a V8...I am a sucker for the noise of them basically, no real other good reason to warrant it tbh.

Crikey, that really is lame if that is true! What do you reckon I should get out of my 2.25 petrol when I fit my fairey over drive?

I have got a 2.25 SWB diesel and I have had it for over 16 years. During this time it has been used offroad for work and for play, it's been a daily driver/commuter and it's done some long trips (Barcelona bieng the furthest).

I reckon Landy-ads has got it spot on. It's not the ideal motorway cruiser but at least at these speeds you can point out of the window and say (or shout) to your passengers "look at that" rather than "did you see that?"

hi, my diesel has done 68 with a bit of a help from gravity and it has a roof rack. But.. towing about 2 tonnes on the M5 , i dropped down to 30mph and an artic over took me .... on the hard shoulder! otherwise its fine apart from the noise and poor fuel consumption.

200TDI is a nice idea but need to be careful, I understand that the series g/box is not designed to take 111bhp, and as for the series brakes........

2.25 doozl is certainly good off road tho', plenty of grunt at low speeds, you probably wouldn't gain an awful lot with the TDi there
