As my current engine is slowly dying out there, I was wondering on the types of similar sized engines that could go in to replace it?
I've heard of many people swapping the standard 2 1/4 for 200tdi's but this can be a expensive not just buying the lump but also getting someone to fit it too.
Where could I get a replacement engine at a decent price?
What other makes could I put in?
Are 2.5 TDs really that knackered as people say?

Does anyone now of a reliable source out there that could look over my existing engine and give me an honest opinion on its condition?

Cheers for now

tds are a very good engine for replacing 2.25 but finding a good one may be hard, they are prone to bore wear ,piston splitting even later coated ones and head cracking between valves, disco 200 tdi should be available cheap and generally are in good nick and dont suffer bore wear ,or head cracking

any 2nd hand engine is dubious! If it's been sitting for a while compression could well be lost with rusting in the bores. Given the work of installation... an engine rebuild isn't horrendously expensive.

Can you wait a few months? I'm putting in a petrol and then i'm getting shot of the diesel. The landy belonged to the vice chairman of a club and said it ran fine but would benefit from a new timing chain. I haven't had it running as i drained coolant for winter and been rather busy this year. Couple of others said they'd be interested but we'll see when the time comes.

I think your best bet is to get another to rebuild [so you've got use of the vehicle still] and then do a swap - that's what i've done in the past with cars. Current price for a 2.25 is from £50-£100. Palletline well worth using for transportation £50 ish anywhere - their line of business is; the item has to fit on a single 1.2m square pallet weight < tonne or somesuch - no problem for engines and gearboxes.
