Hello All !!

I have a 1993 Defender 90 200tdi. When going from 1st to second the gears crunch. It also does it if you go from 3rd to second. it is really frustrating and it tepting sometimes to go from 1st to 3rd. All the other gears are fine.

Could anyone tell me what the solution is?? If it means a whole new gearing system or just certain components.

Any help is much appreciated.:)

Cheers Rob

It's a common thing with the LT77 gearbox. Something to do with the synchromesh not working properly. It's made worse by changing gear at too high an engine speed. I had a disco with the same problem and just got used to it after a while, it didn't get any worse in the 2 years I had it.

Do a search for it, there is PAGES of information about this...

Its also to do with when you are changing gears, don't cane it in 1st then change, and don't drop into 2nd without first lifting the engine speed... match speeds, and all will be silent.

When braking and dropping gear, brake with the majority of your right foot while, using the right hand edge to increase rev's (obviously with the clutch down), then slip it into the gear your dropping into, it will go in cleanly and easily without putting strain on the syncromesh.

could also try changing the gearbox fluid if it aint been done in a while. my 90 is alot smoother now. the filter on the end of the plug was full of little metal bits. doesnt help does it.

You could check that your gear lever is set up right and its housing isn't worn.

It sounds like your syncro hub is Knackered on second gear. Quite common with most landys & if you saw a new one & a worn one no wonder they crunch as it doesnt take much for them to wear to the point of the crunching to start. On the other hand i had a 300 TDI come in once with the common 3rd gear crunch & i took off the gear lever & moved it round one spline as it was set cocked & this solved the 300 TDI Defender.
