I have read through loads of previous oil changing threads and i know what brands and formula's..

what im experiencing is my 94 200 TDI. when i change gear you can hear every clunk through the change do i need to top up the gearbox ??? i want to learn and enjoy doing it all myself but its baffled me..

You will have to check the oil level certainly, only you can say if it's in need of a top up or oil change.

This is what the RAVE manual states on noise and which you can download for more info.

Symptom - Noisy gear selection, vehicle moving.
1. Confirm that clutch operation is satisfactory.
2. Establish which gear/gears is causing noise.
3. Check lubricant specification and level, if low do
not top up at this stage.
4. Drain lubricant and check for contamination or
metal particles.
Suspect worn synchromesh. See remove and
overhaul procedure.
5. Check condition of synchromesh unit, springs
and cones for distortion and wear. Also check
dog teeth for damage and cone mating surface
on gear for signs of overheating.
6. Check condition of all gearbox components,
ensure clearances and adjustments are correct
on reassembly.

Thank you..
I might not word my questions in the right technical jargon for that I apologise lol... When changing down into second the clutch doesn't seem to like it unless you are at a slow turning speed(that's the clutch) when changing its a smooth change in any gear but you hear the clunk and click as it happens is this normal? I know you get your smooth sounding landys and you get a beefy grizly one mines the later wouldn't fault it just wandering if it's normal.. And if I add the fluids will it ease it all?

2nd gear balk ring is usually first to wear ,oil change may help some

I've been quoted £169 to do oils and filters is that ok? I know it's easy money saved if I do it myself as it will be my first attempt confidence is low but that 169 could be a add on else where.

Doing a full oil and filters change on a TDi 200 is really easy. You need:

1. 8ltrs of 10-40 or 15-40 engine oil;

2. 6ltrs of EP 80-90 to GL 4 or 5 - this will do both diffs and the transfer box

3. 3 ltrs of ATFdexron II or III for the main gearbox

4. 1 x filter kit from the likes of Paddocks @ about £12

5. A couple of hours of your time.

If you add up what you can buy the bits for locally, then check what the £169 includes, you can decide if it's worth doing yourself??

I would say it is, if only for the fact that you will learn more about the condition of your vehicle.

PS The gearbox (LT77) on the TDi 200 is well-known for being a bit notchy between first and second.
