Hi all im new to the forum and im looking to buy my first Defender td5, what sort of advice can you give with regards to stuff to look out for as im going to view one over the weekend hopfully.
The Defender TD5 im going to view has covered 130k and seller confirms its had a full service with a new clutch, and heater injector O-rings, he did also tell me that when you start her like all td5s it runs on 4 cylinders until warm then the 5th cylinder kicks in ,, is this true ??

much appreciated for any info guys

Starts on 4 cylinders.?! Nooooooooo! In reality it could be a relatively simple fix but then again it's a land rover and could end up costing you a fair bit! I would suggest you push the seller for a more detailed account, he's obviously hiding something. In fact have him fix it first!

Personally I would never have another TD5 over any of the TDI models, but that's just personal choice and others will have a different opinion.

No it should fire on on all 5 cylinders. If he's lying about that , what else is lying about.
Stay well clear.

They've shown you that you can't trust what they say so if you do go ahead you'll have to disregard everything they say. Effectively you'll be buying blind which is ok so long as you know what you're doing

It would have been bad enough to ignore the fault and hope that you didn't spot it, but to actively attempt to deceive a buyer is very dodgy indeed. I would steer well clear.

That's assuming there is a fault, and the seller knows what he's talking about. Caveat emptor either way.

Even if the engine isn't a problem there's always the rust.

he's being a num nut but.... TD5 only have 4 glowplugs (no idea why) so in theory (and a different univerise) he's sort of right, if a tad pedantic. He just picked up the wrong end of the stick. It should fire on all five, and you'll soon tell if it doesnt, smoke and a hellish rattle. Worth checking the injector wiring loom if it does.

Hell NO 4 glow plugs and all 5 are getting fuel/and air to fire at there appropriate time, no such thing as starts on 4 they switches to 5
