hello sorry for posting again

I'm looking at putting a radiator for 19j engine into a series 3 but wondering how am I going to mount it? Do I hack away the original front grille or mount the original 19j radiator holder some how? Has any one done this before? Let me see what you have got? :)

Cheers

Cos the s3 radiator is ducked and it already had a 19j engine fitted when I bought it! And a mate had a radiator going for cheap from his!

The best way to fit it would be as a whole unit compleat with the mounting frame and grill from a 90/110. Save your series grill for another time like when the 19j rad goes fubar. They are getting thin on the ground.

I know I kinda wanted to stick with the s3 grille! I was kinda thinking about fitting the radiator top rail to the s3 grille some how but wanted to see if any one else had some thing similar

I was looking into this too. Might take a bit of bracket fabrication, but if you move tge screenwash bottle it should be possible to fit it in at a slight angle behind the S3 front end and still clear the steering gear.

I saw a picture on I think Steve parkers I think it was where they had the rail mounted to the s3 grille but obv it can't be seen what else they did with it! I'll see if I can find it again

I know but I've already got the rad from the 19j as the s3 rad is knackered! It's going to have be some fabrication I think a few steel brackets and some ally plate to stop movement

Looking at the photo I reckon they have removed the engine fan.
Mounted the intercooler in front of rad.
Fit electric fan in front of rad between intercooler & rad.

On the bottom/top of rad are locators which will make fitting easy.

I've got some electric fans that I wanna put on with a manual dial, but I'm going to have a go at the mounting tomorrow depending on the weather o_O

Box section on the bottom. Make sure you put some rubber mounts in this for the pins to locate.
Think you can get 2 series top hoses with a bit of straight pipe to line up the top of the rad.
I don't run a fan full time. Only electric when the needle goes over 3/4 normally laning.

Mines a disco 200 in a 110 so I have plenty of room.

Mrs is a series 1 with a 2 1/4 petrol but using the original rad.

Most special builds I do I take time & use plenty of thought. I have mocked up using wood to hold bits while closing bonnets etc & making sure the steering arms/relays Miss.

Problem is that the 19J radiator is the full width of the front with no intercooler. I've had a play on the 109 and it should just fit with the corner tucked into the notch in the wing on the far side. But to clear the steering rod on the other side it might need mounting at a slight angle.
Is there enough space between the water pump and radiator for the viscous fan? If so I'll make up a fan cowl and use that. Also have an old disco fan if that's any shorter.

If you are wiring in an electric fan the best way is to use a fused relay near the fan with a feed straight from the battery, take the relay earth through a temp switch (they are on e-bay) and relay live from a switch on the dash. Use a doule pole 3 postion swich and wire the live supply one side and a parallel earth the other. This gives you a fused cicuit and a switch that is mid off, auto one way and run the other.

Not my best drawing....

Feel free to ask questions. I do remember it took a couple of hours to work out how to get this to work, the dash light defeated me for a while.
Off, nothing is connected through switch, relay swich is to bat live always, but its fused..
pos 1 - relay coil is live through switch and fan earth is to earth through other side of switch so fan runs, light comes on
pos 2 - relay is live through switch and fan will run if temp switch earths, when it does light comes on.
Switch is the toggle type with 3 positions and 6 spades, one side is switching power and the other earth, the 12v tot eh switch can be bat or ign depending on whether you want it to run with the engine stopped or not.
