hi i have a 90 with the 19j engine, only bought last week, every now and then for no reason and totally unexpected it revs itself very high with rattle and a bang of white smoke then in the matter of seconds brings itself back to normal tick over and runs fine again, no problems starting up or on motorway journeys. I have checked the turbo which did have diesel in so i thought that was the problem cuz can smell diesel whilst driving, has anyone else had this problem or advice???

if ya got diesel in ya engine oil then lift pump is knackered. if it's surging when running ya turbo oil seals are on there way out. keep a close eye on ya oil level and if it does go wild on ya stick it in 5th stand on the brakes and let the clutch up as fast as poss this will hopefully stall it before you suck the sump dry, and kill ya engine.

we had a thread recently-boost diaphragm split or similar

Yeah thats your problem, that was our thread. The diaphragm was split so it was feeding the turbo with Diesel! Diesel was going through the diaphragm, through the Boast Pipe, then into the Turbo.

Easy job to do, just 2 bolts on the side of the Fuel pump

thanks for help guys, engine f****d now anyway,:5bbanghead: anyone know of a 200tdi one going in the midlands???

You can buy the diaphram from Delphi for £22 I did last week. The number is delphi diaphragm 7243-006.
You need to go under the vehicle to loosenb the under side nut and make sure you catch the springs and puch rod. Can be done in 20 minutes and your'e away. Will put out white smoke from the residue diesel in the pipes to the turbo but on a drive should clear.
Good to change oil and aur filter asweel

And get the breathers out of the air intake:D:D

I had a similar issue, my engine would unexpectedly rev higher at idle. Then I realised that it only happened when there was virtually no fuel. Keeping her topped up solves this issue. Any ideas why though?
