Im trying to get my wife into one at the moment because im fed up of towing her horses and fetching horse stuff in my l322

Not to mention noisy, uncomfortable and with rock hard suspension. My mate has one on the farm, shakes the fillings from your teeth on the rough stuff where the P38 just glides

that nice comfy p38 ride is ok,
Problem is they spend far too much time broken down so you dont get the oportunity to enjoy it.
Ive had p38,s my last p38 i had for 4 years and it was a lovely clean car that cost me at least 6 to 7 grand in repairs over that time!
Yes ford rangers are not as comfy, or as quick.
But as a work horse 4 x 4 they are a good buy.

All im trying to say here on this topic is that the lady originally asked about p38 issues.
And as we all know, its a mine field.
I guess my point is that if your wanting a cheepish reliable 4x4 and you are not mechanically minded then there are better vehicles than p38, s out there.

Of course, I've done lots of jobs on it but it's been what I call routine maintenance like replacing the airsprings overhauling the valve block and so on. All done at my convenience
Only the gearbox has been what I would call a big problem but even that has been resolved for the time being at minimal costBut I agree for the non mechanically minded, a Jap would be the best bet.

Thats Bollocks is right , i am a female ( dare not say lady, as that would be deception ) with a P38 auto, yep its a lovely car when its working but after a gear box , air suspension, brakes , gasket , head , radiator , fuel pipe problems has cost me more than i paid for it !! and yep i used to tow horses around , and fill it with mucky stuff, and it is immaculate body wise , the poor OH has had a new hobby in being a landy mechanic !! so now fed up with it all he has got me a Jeep with a 4 litre engine ... that can tow without throwing its toys out of the pram !! so you never know there may be a nice P38 for sale on here soon that has had all the work done !!
As much a I love the P38, and the TD5 and the newer models I guess for shear reliability you can't beat Japanese. I had an MR2 Mk2 for about 5 years while owning other cars as well and I never even serviced the thing, did 80 miles a day in it and it only let me down twice when the rad went and the alternator went but they are consumables at the age it was. I think if you want absolute reliability Jap may be the way forward, a Land Cruiser maybe? I've looked at them and they're great, I know they're utterly reliable and everything but I just can't get past the fact it's a Toyota Land Cruiser and not a Green Oval, I'm a glutton for punishment!

have done the jap thing....several years ago, had a Subaru Impreza WRX import, which was a great car, and would deffo own again if i didnt have a black lab who has to go everywhere with me and cant be left .... and the reason i got rid of the Impreza was because it wasn't quite right taking it across muddy paddocks full of hay, straw n horse feed lol I then got an imported Pajero.......wot a pile of crap that was! OK it didn't break down, but that's because it didnt have any GO in it lol Landy's seem to be 110% perfect for wot i want/need lol
