Hi all,

I'm going to be refitting the turbo / manifold to my defender in the near future.
Along with new oil feed and drain pipes.
When I took the old drain pipe off I'm pretty sure I used a 27mm open end spanner on the engine end, but some interweb searching suggests it's a 24mm?

I'm away at work, so am not able to check for myself, but I'd like to buy a crows foot of the correct size which can be waiting for me when I get home in a couple of weeks.

Can anyone say for sure what size, or could it be either, like some other Landy nuts/bolts.

I'm 98.763% sure it is 24mm, thought of that size when I saw the title rather before reading your question

That's confused hell out of me now...
I'm bloody sure I grabbed 26mm, 27mm and 28mm spanners out of the box and it was the 27mm that fitted.
or maybe it's 1 inch (25.4) and it was the 26mm I used?
or maybe it actually is 24mm and I'm just going daft.
Oh God...
I'm too young and pretty to be going senile.

im fairly sure i use an 1 1/16 which is 27mm
 
I am sure it is bigger than 24mm too.....for an unknown reason I am leaning on 28mm but as JM says it could have been a 27mm.....I am fairly sure it is bigger than 24 though.

If we still had our 300 outside, i'd go and check......infact I may have a photo of it somewhere - no promises!

maybe I'm not going mental....just yet.

Even if the old one was 27mm, the new one waiting at home might be 24mm, as others have said.
I'm just going to have to wait and check before splashing out on more shiny tools :)
 
Grab a can of brake or carb cleaner to clean the inside of both the oil feed and oil drain tubes before installation. Prime the turbo with oil first before start up, the turbo re-builders might have done it before but better to do it for assurance.

ps....I've splashed out and got brand new feed and drain pipes

No problem at all, that's what the LZ forums are for..helping each other out and this is one of, if not the best Landy Forums because of some of the guys here.

Thats awesome getting new pipes, dont over tighten them, especially the oil feed pipe and to be on the safe side, you can use some blue locktite on the drain pipe to block coupling.

Spot on mate, much appreciated.
I've already checked the torque settings needed:-
If I use a crows foot, the extra length sticking off the end of my torque wrench will add a bit of leverage, so I'm thinking of going just lower than the recommended settings
Drain adaptor to block - 41 Nm and pipe to adaptor - 37 Nm
