Ok thanks guys, I'm getting the sensor today aswell as the ATF so fingers crossed!
I got the sensor for £6+vat so if it solves it it'll be a cheap fix and one very happy relieved owner!
Once again thanks very much for your info and time in helping me! It's restored my faith in the land rover! As I was contemplating in getting rid of it however if it's something as simple as this sensor and a service I'll keep hold of the old girl and go make some happy memories with my kids in the old girl!

That is a cheapie maybe false economy. Don't be surprised if the sensor does not produce results though. If it does well and good still do the filter and fluid though. You will need a good torx set to change the filter.
 
Yes I'm hoping to get all filters and oils changed this week but will make sensor job number 1! I'm sure iv still got my snap on torx set (goes rummaging through tool box)
 
Found some of my torx bits.. Iv seen on a write up all I'll need is a t27 can anyone confirm this? Aswell as the socket sets and spanners.

Can't remember but T27 sounds close. Put it in bolt apply pressure and tap bit into bolt at same time to shock it free. Just turning it may strip the bolt head.
 
Ok I've just sorted my tool box and seem to have almost full set of torx so I should be ok!
This may be a stupid question/idea but when I change my ATF and filter, as I'm putting oil in can I put it down the dipstick tube? Reason I'm asking is I'll be doing the change on my own and have a 5 litre tub of ATF so it looks a bit difficult/impossible to get ATF in for me without a pump?
I was thinking if I put down the dipstick tube however leave the fill plug out whilst doing this I can watch the fill hole for when it starts to come out? (I seen somewhere you fill it until it starts to come from the fill hole. )
I understand this could take a while longer as I'll have to wait for it to get down the thin dipstick tube, and settle in the sump but it looks like I have no obvious option??

yes down fill tube,but warm the bottles up in warm water so it thins the oil.makes it easier to go down the tube that way.

Iv just in lipped the air filter housing, loosened jubilee clips on the other side of engine and swung over the inter cooler plastic pipe work, so I could see the inlet manifold... Over lander said the sensor I'm looking for is near 5th cylinder. This may be a silly question but which direction do you count from? From standing at the front of the car I can see there looks to be a plug with the u shape clip you prize off under the 2nd and between 4th and 5th cylinders (remember this is counting from the radiator end backwards) it sits above a black plastic rectangular box which at a glance seems to be to do with the injectors? I may be wrong.
Am I looking in the right area?
I heldy phone under and took a load of pics so ill sort through the focused and out of focus ones and post up!

The sensor you are looking for is between cylinders 3 & 4 front of engine as Wammers said, the one at the back of the engine is a thermal switch for overheats.

Should only be two sensors on a 96. The one behind the injection pump is the dash gauge sensor, will be brown or black. Next one along between cylinders 3 and 4 is ECU temp sensor and should be green. If it's not green it's the wrong sensor. The one near cylinder 5 is as Keith says the thermal switch for activating aircon fans on engine overheat. Not fitted to your year of car, only fitted MY 1999 and on.
 
Ok thanks for info guys, got to work 20 mins early to start stripping down, managed to get inlet manifold off (I figured it would be easier to get the nuts off when engines warm save any hassle at dinner time!) and that was all I managed to get done and so far it all came apart nicely and quicker then I expected! So hoping to finish it at dinner and take it for a drive! Also got a maf sensor for next to nothing and seen somewhere that a dirty/faulty maf sensor can cause changing problems so figured id kill two birds with one stone and if it doesn't make any difference id still have one as a spare anyway!
I was expecting to see the sensor on the tubing from the air filter housing to the plastic (turbo inter cooler) pipng going accross the too of the engine but doesn't seem to be anything there?! Any suggestions where I might find this little bugger hiding?

A 96 does not have a MAF, that's why you cannot find it:rolleyes:
