I live in Ireland
I have a 1996 LR Defender County and I’ve lost the ignition key. How do I get a new one quickly? Do I need the key code and if so where do I find it? Obviously I have the VIN

Unfortunate ... you will probably be better off getting a new lock.
They are reasonably easy to change, a bit fiddly but with the plastic, steering wheel and binnacle off.
Don't forget to dissconnect the earth lead from the battery before you attempt to remove the old switch.

The part number is LR077439

As above, a new lock is probably about the same price as a new key anyway! There should be a code on the barrel the key is matched to but you may have to take the barrel out to see the code which you need the key for

Thanks so much for your help! Yep damn rubber on key top finally must have worn through and the key dropped off somewhere. That's what happens when you get old...bits drop off!

Eek....but of course! Thanks for your advice

If you remove the plastic cowling around the indicator stalks, or the wiring behind the speedo there may be a white label with red print, sometimes held on with string . The key number should be written on that.
If it is, a locksmith should be able to cut a new key from the number.

Woof ... those Irish boys there know how to charge to be sure ..

Agreed. Costs for bringing in parts from UK to Ireland has increased since Brexit.
I'm not sure if the lock I showed is the correct one but its a start, pardon the pun....

OK...I may end up doing that
