As of last night my headlights are coming on when i turn my sidelights on and they are dim. When i put the headlights on properly they are fine.

Is it an earth that is to fault or some loose connection? i have unscrewed the bezels and taken the lights out and all is fine.

Must be in the switch or fuse box somewhere?

or could it be the light switch on the dash itself?
 
What happens when you turn the ignition off do they go out if so then that is how they are ment to work..
 
For that age of vehicle isn't that the dim/dip working as it should?
Strangest thing is that if that is what it is, how come it hasn't been working before (assuming you have owned the vehicle for some time)?
 
1996 300tdi defender here also, headlights come on with side lights and then when you switch off only side lights stay on.
 
1995 300 tdi Defender. And my headlights are also on dimly with the ignition on. But sidelights only with ignition off. Dim Dip Relay.

As above, I had exactly the same thing..it was the switch worn

They are meant to do that on that year, so the question is, why did the not work till today!

Maybe the relay suddenly decided to work ?????? We had this problem on both of our 110s PS. If you do a search the answers are there to your problem !! ;)

There is a headlight dim module which takes the sidelight feed, and via a resistor gives the headlight lamps a reduced output. So it could be this has decided to work!
