Could any one help with a problem I have?

My 1994 Soft Dash LSE intermittently won't crank when its had a good run (hot) then shut down. Then once I wait 10 mins or so she fires up no problem.

I'm fairly convinced it's a problem with the feed to the starter rather than the starter, as the old hammer trick on the starter solenoid doesn't seem to work!

My problem is that I can't find the location of the starter solenoid relay on the soft dash car. The manual I have says it's on the steering column but there are no relays on the steering column on my car!

Does anyone have a location diagram for relays on a 1994 Soft Dash, and possibly a wiring diagram for ignition switch to starter motor?

I'm assuming it won't turn over at all rather than spins but won't start. If the latter you might suspect the fuel pump.

My '91 was doing that, sometimes it wouldn't crank at all, try it a couple of times or wait a minute and it would turn over fine. I put a new starter motor on it and the problem went away.

One other thought, check the connections to the starter motor/solenoid, heat etc make the wires brittle, could be if an iffy terminal or joint. Can't say I know where the relay would be but on my 93 LSE I vaguely remember tracing it to the bank of relays under the dash just in front of the steering column (see pic), these are referred to as the steering column relays in the manuals I have seen. If not there then it would probably be in the footwell.

If your immobiliser is playing up it might cause this issue.

I've located the relay and run a flying earth lead from the earth side of the energise circuit.

Next time it plays up I'll earth that lead and see if it starts. That will illiminate electrical faults and point to the starter.

At least now I'm more confident in using the old girl
