Hi all,
Newbie to this site. Just taken ownership of my second defender - 1994 ex MoD 110.
It's just had a full paint job - Olive Green, drab. Looks great. Not had a car with side sliding winds since a mini traveller back in the early 1980's. OK rear half locks closed from inside but front half can be slid open from outside - whoops.
Gotta get better security for it - any ideas or solutions?

That should not be the case. So I would start by inspecting the locking mechanism. It should act on both halves of the window simultaneously so if it is only locking one I would suggest the catch is damaged and needs replacing. The channel on the window it fits into is not plastic so unlikely tp be at fault. I am fairly sure you can get replacement catches. And they just rivet in.
 
What type of sliding window latches do you have? If std MOD types, unscrew from door and inspect the rear arm function. I had similar with mine and by inserting a small piece of cut to size rubber mat into the arm gap this expanded the arm a gnat's cock enabling the arm to function at correct length to stop the front glass rattling.

Sussed the prob once I knew the windows should lock and I will try the piece of rubber as well especially if it helps stop window rattle.
Issue is that the glass/channel bond has broken down. So instead of the glass sliding with the channel it was sliding inside it. Needs cleaning out and new adhesive - once it's stopped bloody raining - no garage to work in.

Do you have a side on picture? Looks like a Series 3 door top with the upright glass. Mil door tops should have an angled opening. In this both halfs open. Series door tops only the rear section should open.

If you need new runners, the plastic ones the Series Owner Clubs sells are the way to go.
 
300bph/ton - thanks for ur interest. They are angled - they look vertical, it's due to the angle of pic. My wife ('m' of JimNm) keeps telling me I'm good at confusing folk.
The channels are good and was hoping to try and do a quick fix with them in situ just so that can get them locked in current weather. Tips welcome.

Quick/easy lock system is a couple of pieces of wood in the channels. At least things will be secure
