Hi guys,

I have a problem with my gearbox crunching down the gears and a slight crunch going up the box. My experience and confidence is good working on any other part of the vehicle, engine strip down, chassis swaps, etc.

Question is: I've never opened up a gearbox before and would ask would anyone recommend doing it? If I open it up, am I likely to be able to source gearbox parts to complete the job?

Alternative, is to drop the problem box and fit a replacement. I'm a bit nervous about the task, but would like to do it for the experience.

So, can parts be got for gearboxes as readily available as engine bits?

Any advice would be much appreciaed.

Cheers

Manual or auto?

I've done one box myself a long ago (a manual Ford Sierra 4 speed box) and also observed LT95 and LT230 overhaul closely a couple of months ago. Manual boxes can be done if you are brave and with the right tools and schematics. But I'd recommend that you have someone with you that has done one or two before.

After all: they are manmade. Have no idea on the auto, though. :D
Parts can be found - some are easy and some a bit harder.

If it's auto, it's a job for the specialists only.
Manuals arn't a problem, it's probably worn syncro rings (brass bits between the gears). a good manual with good pictures is a massive help when re-assembling.

Is the crunching worse when the box is cold? are you using ATF in the box and not EP oils?

What's the mileage on the vehicle? Assuming it is an auto, has it had an ATF + filter change recently? Is there enough ATF in it? Stupid questions I know but mine (also '89) was sounding rough recently and I changed the oil and filter screen, sweet now.
