hello all, having some problems with my cooling system I've got a 1989 90 2.5TD and just put a recon engine/transfer box in. Everything was fine untill it started to overheat! ( only drove it for about 30min) I took a closer look and it seemed the viscus fan wasn't kicking in under hi temp so went and brought a new one fitted that same again under hi temp the fan wouldn't work..Went and brought a new thermostat fitted that this morning and STILL overheating with fan not coming on when hot? please can someone help? not sure if there is some wiring that's meant to go somewhere or how its supposed to determine when to work but I'm not a mechanic and have tried everything i think it could be?

the viscous fan is driven off the engine. and should spin when ever he engine is running. As it gets hotter the liquid in the Viscous unit gets thicker and makes the fan spin faster.

The viscous fan is a purely mechanical device - no wires just a temperature sensitive fluid inside the hub that gets thicker the hotter it gets. Hotter = Thicker = Spins faster.
I'd suspect the water pump or a seriously clogged radiator.

If it's a reconned engine then, assuming you've filled with enough coolant and bled the air out of it. Then you need to get your money back. Is it the same engine as the one you removed or is it a 200tdi upgrade?? if it's an upgrade the temp sensor will give you an incorrect reading.

Thanks all, Well just been out in the garden and made sure i'd put enough coolant in and bled it properly all was fine. Its the same engine as before but from another car the guy put a 300tdi in his and had that spare so i brought it. It runs sweet sounds great and don't miss a beat so was pushed away from the idea of head or porly fitted parts.. The rad is hot all over and i'v cleaned it out so all the crap has been removed. so water is getting everywhere it should..?? I cant believe it as this is the only problem after 4 months of work to the car ie engine transfer box in insides re spray...All i wanna do is go out and play but held back from it overheating

Oh and thanks for the help, joined today ands its nice to no some people can help without trying to get some ££££..

LOL shifty... Hi yes fan is spinning hot and cold. I just wanna add the temp creeps up very slow after the first half on the gage then seems to sit just under the red for a while but still slowly creeps up under strain. If i was to knock it out of gear and rally for a while it will come down very slow but as soon as i put it under a little strain straight back up again. Also she only does around 50mph and thats with 40psi in the tyre's? is that normal or do anyone think its all linked with the over heating?
Getting back to what MUD HUNTER said about the water pump is there a test i can do to see if its that? I'm chucking money at this thing and getting nowhere so wanna make sure from now on.. Once again thanks all :)

Oh also even though i said it only does 50mhp its not a strain to get there so its not like i got my foot down giving it some welly hence overheating. it just runs out or gearing it seems. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP I WANNA GO FOR A DRIVE IN IT. LOL.

you gotta take off the pump an chack the fins for wear rusting n damage. also they should spin properly. my 19j in my 110 will do 60mph eventually but small hills will nock that down to about 50 and big ones much lower.

ok thanks mr hunter i'll give that a go 2moz as long as i don't have to take the head off or anything. I think the waterpump is bolted on the front so should be easy. yea mine will hit 60 but it seems like its hitting the boll**s out of it. My fillins almost come out lol. 50 is a nice drive but i just thought the gearbox should have a bit more init than that. :)

ok took the water pump off everything looked normal and quite new..I think i might bust out the hammer and let loose on the thing its driving me insane..

Yup, whilst the fan might not work, that's not your main problem - i haven't had a fan of any sort on mine for over 2 years and it has never gone above half way, it is unnecessary. The fan is put on in case you decide to take your defender through central africa in a drought and is not necessary under normal UK driving conditions. Could just be the temp sender!

CAN YOU FOOKING BELIEVE IT!!! jumped in the 90 wid my misses tonight with the intention of "if it goes it goes" i wanted to take it out after 4 months of work and never even driving it. I now couldn't care if she gave up on me.. We got about 1/2 a mile and the temp gauge was on half! jumped out and had a feel of the pipes stone cold rad/pipes/expansion tank.. Got back in and carried on it was creeping up to the red and i was unsure weather to carry on or not but did anyway..well needless to say its the gauge fooked or reading wrong cus we had a mint time :) went to all my old lanes around Bristol airport dundry a few of my mates fields :) loved it...missis even had a smile aswell lol.. Thanks for you help all.

If ya look straight on from the front of the engine, on top of the head, right hand side, towards the baulkhead, just next to the turbo.
