I'm trying to order a snorkel but i dont know which to order. I've been having a search on here and most peoples 90's have something on the side to remove then replace with the snorkel. mine doesn't have this, its located on the top the bonnet on the passenger side.. I'm wondering if i can remove this as you would with the side exit one and run the snorkel from that. or is it a completely different set up?

If you get a snorkel get one that has a pipe that comes into the engine bay not the ones that seal by clamping through the wing.

You can put the snorkel where ever you can get it to fit. I know 300 tdi go onto drivers side easy but you can put it left or right. Wherever it's best to locate your pipework

so what about that open vent on top? what happens if water goes in that ?

this is all new to me ha sorry for being a nightmare

I can't tell from the pic but I can't' see a pipe from the air filter going to that. Doesn't look like a standard setup
Think a standard 200tdi usually has filter at passenger side front of engine bay. Not certain though I have a 300Tdi

Looking at your pictures where does the intake pipe for the airbox currently finish? If it is just loose in the engine bay you can attache a snorkel pretty much anywhere you can link the pipe to. As you don't have the wing side vents your options are limited to either using the driverside top vent you mention or cutting through the bonnet camel trophy style. Although if you are going to cut the bonnet you could also possible cut the wing hole to have a side mounted one you could also swap the wing for a later model one including the side vent.

p.s. on a separate side note, why is your intercooler mounted like that rather next to the rad in the frame?

early motors dont have the holes in the wing sides
200 wing side hole is passenger side rhd
300 wing side hole is drivers side rhd
passenger side is best as doesnt create such an obvious blind spot as drivers side mount does.

Early rade are full width and also sit at a different height to the 200/200 style

Mine had a diy through top of wing air intake when I brought it. Not so much a snorkel as a lorry air intake pipe
That'l probably be easier way to do it. Personally I'd do it the hard way on passenger side through wing. Make a better job. Maybe get a diffirent air box and mount it passenger side. A disco square type might fit in nice passenger side

But surely as part of a "tidy" conversion (I have a discovery 200 in mine) the best way is to swap to the later rad, intercooler and frame so everything is mounted at the front? Also with the intercooler moved to the "correct" position there is then more space to fit the airbox on the passenger side to feed to the passenger side wing intake from the 200tdi.

Although with the current airbox position either the wing top or 300tdi wing intake might be the best positions. However as stated mounting it on the drivers side creates a blind spot

Yep thats the way but the bottom chassis rad mounts still need cutting down as they are to tall.
Maybe the guy didnt know or didnt have the money or just used what he had?
Iirc the early wide rads are quite expensive

sorry, wasn't being ignorant, for some reason i didn't get any notifications for this :/..

as for the rad/intercooler i have no idea whats going on I've just bought it haha. once i start to get knowing parts and how to tackle stuff I'm gonna try and sort everything out as its a bit of a mess.
thanks for the replies, more reading and friend popping round to talk me through it i now know what i need for the snorkel and what to do to get it sealed uo correctly. wade kit has come so putting that on at the weekend whilst doing the diff oils.
