Afternoon all.

just thought i should knock this one on the head before it gets cold and i actually need it.

basically the heater doesnt work. It blows old cold air so the fan is obv fine, but the air is cold not even lukewarm and def not hot! any ideas?

i dont expect this vehicle to be warm in winter like a car would be but a bit of warm air out of the heater would be nicE!

cheers

Its run off the land rovers cooling system. Hot water flows through a matrix of some sort and gits blown into the cab. Mine doesn't work either. mines the fan though. it keeps blowing fuses. I'll put a jumper on...

in that case maybe it is related to the fact that i keep losing water in the cooling system?

i have to top it up every week or so.

I'll be stripping mine down probly next week to renew the sealing stuff inside I'll tek some pics and bung em on here. But fost thing to do is to see if the matrix and pipes to it are getting hot.

ok il have a look. wont be for a while though im currently at home with a broken leg and as obv i cant drive the motor is sitting in a field on my cousins farm!

My 90 is always warm! Just as soon as it's up to temperature and ive throttled it up a hill there's heat coming straight through the bulkhead and up from the gearbox :)

The only thing that I depend on my heater for is demisting the windscreen. You'll be buggered when it gets to winter and you can't keep it clear, so best get it sorted as quick as possible!

The fan for the heater is in the black box on the right of the bulkhead if you open your bonnet. It's the block with the "Use official landrover Parts' sticker stuck on it. I think that pipes from somewhere around the engine block run into this box and air is blown over. Whether or not there is a matrix in the heater fan box or not I don't know, so it may be worth checking.

I'm not sure what type of heating system Defender has, it will either be a blending system which is where the coolant is flowing through the heater matrix constantly and the mixture between hot and cold air is controled by a flap or the other way is the flow of the coolant into the matrix is controlled by a flap. Check to see if the flap is working, you should be able to hear open and close when you turn from cold to hot in the cab. If it sounds like it's operating ok it could be the matrix that's blocked, sometimes you can clean them with a fierce cooling system flush which you can buy from all motor factors but if it's too corroded / blocked you'll need a new one. I've seen some cars that have had a matrix problem and the owner is too tight to fix it so they just bypass the matrix with a hose so look out for that as well.

You need to find where the coolant is leaking from Chris to do the right diagnosis. Do you get any drips under the car?
