Errr, whoops, sorry chaps! It's a 1994 Defender 90 300TDI not sure where the 8 came from (think I'm going mad) !!

Anyway update:

I have spoken to the dealer and he said that you don't have to double d clutch with them but older landrovers often get this issue and the price I've paid is very fair for what I've got. He said that if I basically move from 1st.... pause for 1/4 second and move to 2nd it should be fine. Well doing that it does change gear without making a grinding noise 9 out of 10 times with the 10th time being a minor noise.....

I am otherwise happy with it but was going to get it looked over tomorrow by the local landrover expert. I did speak to a chap locally who reconditions series land rovers but he said mine was far too modern :D

Will post tomorrow after my visit....

There are one or two other minor issues but they things I can sort easily. The back door was replaced at some point by one with a rear wash wipe and the button has been installed on the dash but not the wiring :D Shouldn't take more than half an hour to sort that (famous last words!).

Overall though I've loved driving around in it today and it seems to be aiming for 35-40 mpg

Wow 35 - 40mpg :jaw:

Your going to be the envy of Landyzone with those fuel returns.
Wish mine did 35. Can only get 30 out of it. That was before it was smashed up!!

:D

I'm not going to base the mpg on this small fill..... The gauge was on empty when I collected it then I zero'd the odometer and stuck 4 gallons in. It's reading 108 now so thats 27mpg so far but it's still showing a third of the fuel left that I put in.... The last third might just shoot downwards on the gauge after I start driving tomorrow and I get 30mpg but I'm hoping it holds up !! :)

I'm normally pretty good with fuel economy. I get 80mpg from my Golf which isn't supposed to do anything like that. This was a picture I asked my wife to take yesterday:

I'll fill it up when I know what's happening and then I can get a more accurate assessment of what it's doing by refilling it at the same pump after doing some driving.

I get 27mpg out of my 110 300tdi. you won't get better than 30mpg despite whatr anyone else tells you. Unless it's on the back of a RAC truck.

As for the gearbox the dealer is taking the ****.

I'm not experienced enough with Landys to say for sure what the issue is and whether it's something that the dealer should be sorting. I'll get it looked at tomorrow and then I'll be in a position to harass them over it, I really can't see them giving me enough back to sort it without resorting to the courts. The dealer keeps saying that he knocked £390 off the list price due to the faults but I didn't know about the gearbox then and that £390 was due to the doors needing replacing as they were not up to the same standard as the rest of the car. He might change his mind if I start naming and shaming on here and the photography forum where I'm a moderator and the threads start coming up on Google :D

+1 on the Dealer. The dealer is just stroking you, giving you a line of ****, pulling the wool over your eyes, taking advantage of your lack of knowledge, until the warranty is over. there is a issues with the transmission like the syncros are worn and that is the grinding you here. It will get worse. try giving the right foot a little rpms on the shift

So get all your money back then. It's been sold in an unfit state. If it int fit for purpose. He's required by law to refund you in full or rectify the fault.

have a look at similar defs for the money you paid ,is even with cost of repairing box still make car good value considering major component condition ,many others may well have rotten chasssis bulkhead etc and cost more in the long run ,no tdi def is going to be perfect so your going to have to weigh up what faults you want to live with or repair

looks nice but thats only the bit you can see, have a look at others especially chassis from underneath not just from side etc ,then youll know its worth

The chassis appears very good. I got underneath and had a proper good hack away at it. The rear end has had the replacement section fitted and it looks like it was fitted well. The rest of the chassis and bulkhead are absolutely sound with nothing other than a little surface rust. There was just one small jagged hole about the size of two 10p pieces which I pointed out and which they welded up before the MOT. The only other issue was a tie bar in front of the rear nearside wheel which needed replacing and which they have ordered a new one and are sending to me to fit.

Well the mpg did fall away and its just under 34mpg :D

I went to Crook Bros at Houghton near Preston which is just up the road and he had a look over it....

Front steering arm is bent - This is why the steering wheel is slightly skew £20
Front diff casing is slightly dinged - Just live with it but it does demonstrate it's been off road.
Steering box - Has the original older design one and the box is worn, a refurb kit is unlikely to fix this. £160+vat
Gearbox - Yep. It's working fine other than 1st to 2nd syncro. This will only get worse and the only fix is another box preferably a recon £495+vat

Spoke to the seller and pointed out the "superb" and "knackered gearbox" do not fit in the same sentence. He assured me that they would make it so that I was happy. They are currently ringing around looking for a box......

Now unless they supply and fit the box it is no good to me because it they just offer me another box how do I know it's even as good as the current one and after the labour costs to fit it I would not be able to swap it back out again and even if I did I would be back at square one.

Chap from Crook said that the landrover is worth what I paid if the gearbox is sorted and to be honest it would have been worth more than what I paid if it had had a newly reconditioned gearbox...... So I'm going to try for £200 back towards the recon gearbox and then I'll get an Ashcroft box into it and go from there.

you might want to up grade to a R380 when you do that

It has an R380 in it now which I believe will be a J prefix.

Ashcrofts have offered to replace the J prefix box with an L prefix box for a surcharge of £100+vat.

I have reached an amicable settlement with the seller who has paid half the cost of a replacement box. I feel this is fair because I will then have a recon box which I know the history of etc.......

Is the L box worth £100 more than the J ???
