I have a 1980 Santana that’s being restored this year. It has a 4 speed non overdrive gearbox.

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations regarding addition of an overdrive or replacing with a 5 speed unit?

I’ll be doing some long motorway drives in the car and am looking for some motorway cruising capability without going deaf.

Not shure what gearbox Santana were using in 1980. I recon you need to look on a more local level for an answer.

Are you doing the work yourself or getting a local Spanish garage to do the work?...any pics?...we like pics...
 
I can't remember for sure but didn't the santanas use the toro overdrive?

if so that fits on an ordinary landy gearbox
 
Thanks for the tips guys. Some food for thought. I’ve looked at the global Roamer overdrive and I’ll get in touch with Ashcroft.

I live in the Middle East, the car is going to be worked on by a specialist in the UK, and ultimately I’m going to keep it at my house in Spain.

It’s a Spanish plate. It was owned by a Spanish municipality for 30+ years.

Ah...good...no matriculation needed...I'm just wating for my plates for my 101 here in Portugal...it's taken 18 months...again lovely motor...
 
Looking at how nice it is and if you have the budget get a Roamerdrive, they use epicylclics and share the gearbox oil, getting round the 2 main problems with a Fairy overdrive. Don't get an Aschcroft, you end up with a decent top but very wide gaps between gears. The O/D gives you 2 more gears (3+OD) and 4+OD) that are really handy.
 
Sage counsel guys. Thanks! Overdrive it is. And Roamerdrive is an investment (so I’ll tell my wife).

I don’t plan to sell the car so I’m happy investing in quality at the refurb stage to provide some reliability in years to come. It’s going to be a £10k(+) job excluding parts that I’ve already bought - replacement panels so far have cost a small fortune - full front wings, doors, rear wings, rear door.... body wise it’ll be mint. I just need reliable mechanics to match.
 
Its not an LT85 Santana box, its an LT77 Series box. I believe Santana was just the name as it was built in Spain. I have recently had an Ashcroft rebuilt LT85 box for my 1985 V8 90 and am very pleased.
