Hi all, this is my first post, so please be gentle with me.

Does anybody know what this number signifies? At present it’s on the front axel of my 1980? S3-88-Petrol.

The only other identification number I have on the vehicle in the 14-digit VIN (LBCAH1AA121383) which states it’s a 109 but it’s an 88 or is now! The engine is a replacement and there appears to be no number on the chassis leg or on the V5.

Sounds like you have a ringer no way the chassis can be legally shortened. so some pics of chassis as 88 and 109 are made differently. 88 4 plates welded together 109 two halves welded to gether with seam top and bottom.
 
Where is the VIn plate fitted? Maybe that part has been replaced.
Is the VIN number on the V5 and does it match?

I have been on to DVLA and because its manufacture date is 1980 but first registered 1990 it could be: on private land – import or Ex Military. (Its dark green with Safari top).
 
Diff made early 1979. How is the vehicle described on the V5c?

The axles themselves may still have a visible number stamped on axle case rear passenger side /top.
Can you find the rear diff number to see if same ball park number.
Late 1980 had different half shafts and two same size bearings in the wheel hubs.

dvla just register the details supplied on the registration form.

if it was ex-mod then it should be sorta obvious:confused:
anything could have happened BUT there should be a papertrail that can be followed if ex-mod.

Hi Zed again. When you say it's - sorta obvious, I'm being thick here. What are the signs if not either; Camo or definite MOD colour.
 
Other than colour, ex MOD types often have extra non standard bracketry where military equipment was fitted, Holes and shading where unit badges were fitted. Extra driving info signs in cab. However in the 70's 80's the MOD did purchase a batch or two of standard Landy's when there was a shortage as the result of things like the Falklands war.
On Landy's of 30 years plus who knows what parts have been changed so numbers on them may be of limited value. Some pics may help.

maybe worth a heritage cert as this will have factory build details etc.

take what the dvla say with a (ton) bag of salt, they have the info as supplied by the person filling the forms @ first registration AND bored agency staff that might have read said forms before the (haphazard) data-entry....

Thanks Zed, Agree with the apathetic data inputters and also if the information on the forms was hand written ……… well look at Doctors hand writing. I’ve got a feeling there’s many a person with this type of dilemma.

Do bear in mind that if you have an ex-mod vehicle it's quite possible that the diff was replaced with a recondition unit in service.

If you really need the full story on your diff contact Nige at 4x4 excess.

Do you have a photo of the rear crossmember? The gearbox crossmember? They are different on military spec. vehicles.
