however it's been off the road for a while, it may be out of MOT and not insured ... in which case you can't get a tax disc for it at renewal time whether it's free or not.

Fair point - forgot you need a MOT cert. and Ins. to get a tax disc - even a free one :)

In deep rutted mud it doesn't perform as well - partly because its wheels are not as wide and ground clearance isn't as great.

On rocks it can seriously out perform defenders / discos. I was leading a group up part before chapel gate in Derbyshire (you tube it if you don't know it) and i was told not to be surprised if i struggled cus last time they had to tow a challenge truck up. Made it up no problems. A few vehicles later and a few major issues we had to make some steps up with rocks and waffle boards to help them up.

I guess if you went to pay and play sites you'd probably not do as well as deep water / deep mud a well kitted out defender or disco will out perform a series.

But, you have more fun in a series.

Never had to be towed / recovered in my 2a (Touch wood).
Been on runs where sorted defenders and jacked up discos got stuck but not my standard 2a.
Of course that could be down to the driver :)
