I have a 1959 series 2 landrover but when I have checked the chassis number it says it should be a petrol, what this have had a 2ltr or 2.25 in it? At the moment I'm thinking of returning it to original, would this affect the value once restored?
 
Keeping it original would add a premium to its value I would expect

I believe the first 1500 , or so, Series 2s had 2ltr. petrol engines in , after that they used 2 1/4ltr. engines . They were basically using up their stock of 2ltr. engines . Therefore by the time yours was built it would have been a 2 1/4. What is in it at the moment ? Putting the correct engine back in won’t devalue it , but conversely leaving whatever is in it won’t necessarily devalue it either .
 
I would predict the orginal engine will increasing add value. People are still taking orignal engines out so the supply of Series with orginal engines is still going down, soon an original engine series will be hard to find and values will rise at the same time there will be a shortage of engines. Following the price of 2 1/4 petrol engines on e-bay is informative. Good engines are £900 but very good are now £2500+.whereas the TDIs are around £500 with really good ones (ie with warrenty) still less than a decent petrol. I would grab a petrol off some fool who's taking it out and putting it on e-bay and doen't realise how it will be to get it back later.
 
It was registered in october 1959 so it sounds like it should have the 2.25ltr petrol engine.
I have 2 engines in the workshop, both 2.25d but one is a 3 bearing and the other is a 5 bearing engine.
Now to decide which to fit

If it is not a petrol it is not going back to original so fit the 5mb and have the stronger diesel.
 
That will be a simple job to get back on the road and you could keep a look out for a petrol before the prices go silly.

I’ll hold onto my spare 2 1/4 for a bit longer then .
