Can I have some advice and information, please?

I've got an '03 Discovery 2 on it's original 16" alloys.
A local breaker has a 2000 P38 Range Rover in for dismantling and it has a nice set of 18" Hurricane alloys with good tyres. I believe that they fit directly on to a D2 and what I would like to know, please, is whether the speedo needs calibrating to suit the larger wheels and if not what will be the % speedo error with them.

Oh yes! Should I inform my Insurance although the wheels are genuine Land Rover and not aftermarket.

Thank you

Assuming the wheels fit, you may be able to negate having the speedo recalibrated dependant on the profile of the tyre you fit.

There are online tyre calculators that you can play around with to see how close you can get the rolling radius to original spec. Then you get to find out if such a size exists!

Have a play with this:

These fit Ok - and were original equipment on ES models. Standard tyre size is 255 55 18 and there is no need to re-calibrate the speedo. However - I changed my 18 inch wheels ror 16" because the ride on 18" absolutely terrible. Follows ruts caused by heavy lorries. Had no such proplems with the 16"

agree with above. my es came with 18" wheels. had good tyres with plenty of tread. just seemed to grab all the irregularities in the road.
put 16`s on and drives like my other 2 cars. ie neutral feel.

Thanks a lot for your replies.
I had read that 19" and 20" wheels tended to "tramline" but I hadn't heard about such problems with 18".
Something new learned today.

I think I WILL stick to my 16" original wheels in view of your advice. The tyres will be cheaper anyway.

I haven't noticed any handling problems with my 18,s and the only drawback is the price of tyres! They do look good on the vehicle though, i would say get them!

Hi bringing up and old thread I have an 99 es with 18inch hurricanes on it and it has 255/60 r18 108H on the front and 255/60r18 112H on the back.I need to change the backs as they are not in great shape.
Over here in kurmit land they fail your Mot if your tyre size and speed rating is wrong so getting it right is quite important.
Should the tyres be 255/55 r18 108H is this the original manufactures size.
Any help appreciated tried searching net and looking round the car for a sticker with tyre size a pressures.

My 04 Landmark has standard fit 18" Hurricanes, have to say that I find the ride and handling fine, on 255/55/18 General Grabber AT.
Id say that they do look good but tyre choice is more limited.
You wouldnt need to advise your insurer as they were a standard (or factory optional) fit for D2s.

Do you have any speed rating after the tyre size.Thats what I need to know I know someone who bought 4 new 18 inch tyres for a quasqui without speed rating and it failed mot because of that. Then he had to buy A full set for Over 1000€ that are the proper tyre size for the car.

Recommended sizes and ratings from the Disco 2 owner's handbook:

7j x 16 (alloy) 235/70 R16 105H

8j x 16 (alloy) 255/65 R16 109H

8j x 18 (alloy) 255/55 R18 109H

Thanks for that I didn't get an owners handbook probably got sold on eBay before I bought the car.

The grabbers are H rated, good for 129 MPH, think the Td5 top speed was listed at 98 or 99 IIRC, I'll certainly never see 129 in mine

255/55R18 109H is the size given in the owner's handbook.

Our D2 came with Range Rover Sport wheels which were very quickly sold and 16" wheels fitted with 255/65R16 tyres.

My ES has 18"s as standard and drives great. Anyone having issues might want to check other components in the drive train and suspension.
