To add my 19 year old son to my range rover classic they wanted £18000

I dropped the phone ffs,

He has just insured his sj410 with me as named driver for £1343.00 with admiral. No one else would touch him as he is to young or the car is to old...

My quote was £425 FC for that series mosh pit I've just built, with lancaster and I've got no no claims and a crash……oh three points too

Anyone else thinking kids these days have (parents with) too much money

one kid looking at paying £4k insurance just so he can drive a TD5 (for some reason. a 300 is such a better engine) then another talking about buying a D4. :confused2:

(mind you, he also had to speciify it was a 61 plate... so a show boater too. Could have just said X trail.)

Firstly, all my cars and insurance have been paid for by myself.

I also specified the age as you will find that the newer the vehicle the cheaper they are too ensure. The comparison was between a 16 year old Defender and a newer vehicle and upon chatting to a few companies the age had a fairly big effect.

I mentioned D3/4 purely because they are likely to be cheaper to insure for myself in the future and are in fact cheaper now then a defender!

I dsiagree... my D3 costs about 5 times more to insure than my 1971 Spitfire and my 1964 Land Rover.

Older cars are much cheaper to insure :D

If you've managed to get a good job + can pay your rent, buy food and then afford nice cars and insurance at a very young age, then well done to you, but, the majority of people I come across either have parents who pay for everything, or, live rent free with all bills and food paid for and all their earnings are just disposable income to spend on toys.

Cheapest car I've insured is my 13 plate BMW 1 series, only a 1.6 turbo derv but at 700/year at 19 with 3 points its pretty good. Half the price of previous older cars (318i, 316i, mx5, gaylander, 106)

But 4k on 12 months Insurance?.. This kid has far too much money to burn - or maybe daddy does. If he wants to blow 4k on something he can't actually touch he'd be much better off buying me a 90 CSW ;):p

Trouble is though is my mini is just shy of £3000 to insure for a year with my 52yr old dad as a named driver and a gay smart box thing. A 300tdi/v8i disco is around the £4600 mark so in my eyes if its going to be my first car that I will most likely crash in I'd rather it be a 2.5l 300tdi. But then my 1340cc mini leaves most cars standing, which makes me want to drive faster therefore increasing the chances of a crash. Who knows, such a stick situation...

2600 and 4600 is a difference of £2000, which is a lot of money to be paying for insurance!! I've never paid more than 1600, although I started with a 1.1 106 which I bought for £200! If you're gonna crash you're gonna crash, whether its a 10mph roll onto the roof of a disco or smashing a mini into something from going too fast!

And if you're gonna want to drive fast you may as well do it in something more forgiving - drive a disco too fast and you'll be in more trouble than if you drive a low centre of gravity mini too fast.

I honestly think the first year of driving until you have a NCD is all about getting it as cheap as possible to get that first year under your belt (or 10 months accelerator with elephant like I did)

I know it's not what you want to hear but my first land rover was a freelander, and I didn't even buy it because it was a landy, I bought it because it was the cheapest car for me to insure that I quoted! So if you're desperate for a landy try quoting on a freelander

Did someone mention admiral? Oh dear, good luck if you are unfortunate enough to have to make a claim, they are useless.

Insured my disco this year with a company call glynnwood, excellent service. Could be worth looking them up?

All my mates have had some dealings some how with EUI ltd (bell, admiral, elephant, diamond) and never had a problem! Although I don't think any of us have had to claim! Surely if they are regulated by the FSA and are recognised by the MID they can't be that bad, and you'll have ways of getting them to talk eventually?

Quinn have started coming up cheap, might go with them next year

mate,if you want a landrover as your first motor, then dont go for a nice shiny expensive td5,have a tidy series 3,or a series 2,and put it under limited miles, and u might be in with a chance,if its on van insurance, even better! trust me i know,iv been driving a 2.25 diesel series 3 swb for a year now,and it was 900 quid for the year! get something older mate! im looking at a 1995 disco this year, and its not too bad,but still isnt cheap! oh by the way,try aviva online quote, but get something older mate, much more fun to drive aswell, and will teach you to drive properly! :D

I see where everyone is coming from, I do love the old series 3's and 2's to be fair however if I can get a 300tdi or even a td5 then without a doubt I would get one. Also I can't have a panel van where I live due to being located on the border of the low emission zone -.- hence the idea of a disco or station wagon and some td5 panel vans are still allowed to operate within the lez so that's worth a go I reckon

That is some quality bull **** you are trying to convince yourself with. Its not likely you will crash your first car. Its about 1 in 5 drivers who crash in their first year so you have a bout 80% chance of not crashing. (forgetting all the other variables)

The thick end of 2k is alot of money to waste on insurance and if you already have the mini go and have some fun with that. Landrovers and most other older 4x4s have very little going for them they are slow, boring and noisy to drive. You will not believe how much i would love a different car but I only have one as need the space for a family and 2 dogs and need the 4x4 bit as regularly tow big trailers. mine is a disco 300tdi in good condition and its still crap.

I may be completely wrong but i think you will soon be bored of driving the landrover everyday and have a lot more fun with the mini. I am now just saving for something like a newer mitsubushi shogun or discovery 3/4 as only these modern 4x4s which drive a lot nicer.

If you want it for offroading with the 2k you save you can afford quite a lot of time on an offroad course in a borrowed landrover and kill that instead.

Matt,

In all honesty, if you've already got yourself a mini, stick with it. They're by far the cheapest sort of car to insure. Trying to insure a LR at your age would be extremely expensive.

Regards,

Ed

It depends what you insure and who you insure it with, a td5 will be very expensive but something like a series 3 or 2a with the right insurance companies will be very cheap

My first car at 17 was a L series freelander

Insurance was £300 cheaper then it was going to cost on a 1.1 Corsa

No brainer really !!

And a wicked first car, wanted to be different :)

2.0_hippo: that's exactly my point. A lot of young drivers own minis, clios etc. how many young drivers do you see wit a defender. And sure I know people are going to say that's because they are generally expensive. But I think it's doable ?

Adrian Flux insured me on my 3.0 TD6 L322 Range Rover when i was 19 !!

one of only a few insurance companies who would even insure me ! lol
