I have a 12j engine with a hole in the side of the block and con-rod trying to escape. I have been offered both 14j and 15j engines to use the block and crank etc. for rebuilding the 12j. Is this do-able?

14J and 15J are freight rover/taxi versions of the same engine. Slightly higher injection pump location and non-waterproof timing case. I don’t know whether you could fit your 12J ancillaries to a 14 or 15J block.

12J is the standard engine, 11J and 13J have the military modified breather. Any of these 3 shouldn’t be a problem.

Few on eBay at the moment. Or take the opportunity to fit a 300tdi with a Steve Parker kit.

I believe timing case from 12J can be fitted to 14 & 15J , Sherpa manual attached may help.

Have stripped the 14j engine and it appears to be the same as the 12j ( apart from the timing cover and oil cooler etc.) and should be ok with ancillaries, as suggested. I will replace bottom end bearing shells and oil seals as a matter of expediency. The manual says to replace the bearing cap bolts but nobody seems to sell them.Do others not bother and re-use the old bolts? Thanks

i dont know any in the trade that would have ever changed those, use some stud lock as with all the internal nuts bolts, the blocks are all the same petrol or diesel, later turbo diesel was the same block but had feed drilling and return hole for turbo, so turbo blocks with 2 plugs could be used for any other previous 4 cylinder

Hello All
Still working on the 14j and having fun with parts identification.Need new piston rings and looking on Bearmach and Paddock there are Hepworth sets with three rings and GKN with four. Please see attached photos for my problem. The piston has ETC5041/3 stamped on the top and GKN logo inside. Any ideas would be appreciated

Continuing from my earlier post and having cleaned the piston grooves I have measured the compression ring grooves for the 14j engine as 2.5 mm wide which is noticably different to the 12j pistons (which are 2.0mm). Could this help to identify the rings? Thanks

any luck with finding the pistons and or rings

Hi Folks. Just to round off my original post. My 14j block has been running happily now for the past 5 months, no modification necessary. The items used from the 14j were block, crank and piston assemblies. Everything else was transferred from the 12j plus new wearing parts. Special thanks to member Blackburn for help. I would be happy to answer any questions for others going thro' the same exercise. Ps do not use Haynes manual to set up timing.
