Hi Folks,

Having given up on the idea of upgrading my L322 4.4HSE with satnav/tv due to cost and complexity, I want to tidy up the installation of my Navman satnav unit by connecting it to a 12 volt source to avoid cable running from the cigarette lighter socket over the dashboard to the unit.

Having removed the side panel of the driver's side air vent and light switch module, I found a little white connector with a pair of wires (brown and red/blue).

Usually brown = +12v, but I get nothing with a volt meter, regardless of the position of the ignition switch.

I thought that perhaps a fuse needs to be inserted somewhere for this wire to go live.

Any ideas peeps

when your doing it, get a external aerial, it makes a real big difference on starting from cold ( it get the signal a lot faster in other words) and its more accurate, and in towns and city's, rainy cloudy days you still get a very good signal, it cost me £6 on Ebay, well worth the spend and time to put it on

why not just tap into a feed that goes to the cigarete lighter its easy enough to access and you have the +ve and -ve together ? just a thought .

I think the cigar lighter will only work with the ignition on?

Hi Guys,

Lighter socket is always live.

The L322 dashboard is a NIGHTMARE to remove, so tapping into the exisiting socket and running a concealed wire would be a lot of work.

Getting 12 volts near the drivers side vent would make the job soooooooo easy.

Ive taken all my passengers side dash out glove box etc to install the wiring for my 4 &2 screens dvd player freeview (if i can get an ariel that works) and there is loads that you could connect onto then run wires round back of the heater controls to the drivers side.

On my P38 if i turn the ignition off the cigar lighter is off too the reason i know that is because i wanted to put a solar panel up to trickle charge the battery, but because it isn’t always on i couldn’t do it, but i use the solar panel on my SII now and it works a treat on that!!

Good job too, as I believe everything comes out of the BECM. Every time you switch something on, it sends a 'request' to the BECM, & if it considers all parameters are ok, it 'allows' the request, so, if the fag-lighter was permanently connected, you may have 'fried' it, not good.

Why not connect the solar-charger direct to the batt??
