Well lads, I have another problem and since you have steered me right in the past I though i'd post here again for advice.:)
I have a noise coming from the underneath of my defender, and I think it's an expensive one! In 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gear there seems to be a rubbing noise(similar to a warped disk) and It seems to be Gearbox. I put it up on stands and put it in gear, got down into the pit and it seems to be rear of the gearbox. And it's also there on tickover (very faint)
It's not overly loud, but it's getting louder. Anyone got any ideas on what it could be? Gear/transfer box oil levels are fine and oils are as clean as a whistle.
Cheers

if 4th gear is quiet its one of the layshaft bearings ,most likely one in rear extension housing if oil is clean

Thanks James, A gearbox out Job I take it. seems to be in the rear of the box alright. Is it just a set of bearings I'll need to replace?
Cheers

you will have to see when you have it apart often if rear most then just that one but if main l/s bearings do both ,let us know i can give you part numbers and prices, dont use pattern ones

Excellent. Sure I might aswell do the lot when it's out. I'd be greatful if you could give me the price for the full set, you can pm me or email me @ jpmcgloin@yahoo.com.
Thanks for all your help.
Cheers
John
